--- Comment #12 from Stephan Wefing 2007-08-10 15:11:55 MST ---
Just a final note for the record: The data transferred from the monitor to the
computer via DDC seems to comprise not only the supported VESA modes but also
the exact display dimensions.
The original xorg.conf file (attachment 149023, see comment 1) contains the
line "DisplaySize 387 290" in the monitor section. These dimensions are
slightly wrong. The correct display dimensions as specified in the monitor
manual, however, are 360x270 mm, Using DDC, the X server ignores the wrong
dimensions provided by xorg.conf and uses the correct size resulting in a
resolution of (90,96) dpi, see the log file provided by attachment 149024 in
comment 2.
However, upon using the NoDDC option the X server accepts the data provided
by xorg.conf yielding a resolution of (84,89) dpi, see the log file provided
by attachment 155638 in comment 7. For most applications this does not seem to
make a noticeable difference. However, I found one applications that showed
grossly distorted characters, see the attachment of the next comment. This is
straightened out if the correct size is specified in xorg.conf, see the next
but one comment.
The wrong display size in the original xorg.conf file was generated by sax2.
Officially, the Nokia 446Xpro monitor is a 19" monitor and this was correctly
recognized by the database of sax2. The snag is that the actual diagonal
measures only 17.7" as specified by the monitor manual. sax2, however, seems
to calculate the display size using the nominal size of the diagonal and the
correct aspect ratio of 4:3.
Conclusion: Upon using the NoDDC option one has to check xorg.conf very
carefully even if it was generated by the help of sax2.
