I have a
  Model: "Intel WLAN controller"
  Vendor: pci 0x8086 "Intel Corporation"
which uses 
  Driver: "iwl4965"

The connection works quite well, including "host", browser, email etc.
However, if I try to use "ping" as user I get:

$ ping 213.148.129.30
socket: Permission denied

$ traceroute 213.148.129.30
traceroute to 213.148.129.30 (213.148.129.30), 30 hops max, 40 byte packets
unable to create UDP socket: Permission denied
