I'm almost positive the partition was not previously formated ext2/3. It
likely was null filled. If that too is "as designed" then just close this
again.
== Re-test
I just reperformed another test install. This time on /dev/sda2. (Minimal
text only install.)
The MBR was set to type 0xC. (ie. FAT32)
The partition itself was null filled prior to the install initialization. (ie.
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda2. I did a od -cv /dev/sda2 and captured the first
few MBs of output if you would like to see it.).
The same thing occurred. ie. During the install, grub failed to mount the
partition after the partition was ext2/3 formated and loaded with software.
