Well, stopping processes times out and you gen an error message (in syslog,
that is, but still). This looks more like a device driver going crazy, but
triggered mainly by NetworkManager.

You could also try if you can still switch to console 1 (probably log into
console 1 before trying to suspend) and maybe check with "ps aux" what the
system is doing.
Maybe it is still doing something in userspace. A hanging "rmmod" for example
would be a prime example for something that could trigger that.

I know it is not funny to debug this and (un?)fortunately something like your
bug seldom happens on the hardware/software combinations i use...
