Summary: USB external disk 'device not accepting address'
Product: openSUSE 10.2
Version: Final
Platform: i586
OS/Version: SuSE Other
Status: NEW
Severity: Major
Priority: P5 - None
Component: Kernel
AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
ReportedBy: mvdv@xxxxxxxxxxx
QAContact: qa@xxxxxxx

Hi,
My own fault for not spending a few days reading around before trying/doing the
following:
Plug in a new external usb drive (details below).
Use yast to partiton the drive, as ext3, no automount (details below).

There are no error reported.
Unplug the drive and plug back in to the usb port.
Now the drive isn't recognized byu the system.

Before trying to report this as a bug, I'd appreciate any suggestions - I'm new
to linux (having just switched from XP), so am finding it very ironic to
constantly read suggestions along the lines of: 'plug the device in to Windoze
to format' and then you should be able to access from Linux.... is this really
my only chance? I don't have access to windows - It seems I was foolish enough
to remove it from my computers.... sad.gif

/etc/fstab entry is
/dev/disk/by-id/usb-LaCie_BigDisk_Extreme_AAE0830D2809-part1 /media/taq ext3
user,noauto,acl,user_xattr 0 0

there is no such 'file/link' (?) in /dev/disk/by-id

The messages I can see when I plug the device in are:

Finally, as some have suggested since 2004, if I try
rmmod ehci_hcd; modprobe ehci_hcd
or
rmmod uhci_hcd; modprobe uhci_hcd

there is no improvement, in fact my system goes hay-wire for a time - I don't
recommend this to anyone.
