The 4G problem was probably hddtemp holding onto the device thus preventing
revalidation. You need to configure hddtemp such that it only accesses fixed

Regarding IDE cdrom driver, I'm not so sure whether changing the behavior is a
good idea. IDE drivers are scheduled to be replaced by new libata drivers and
people (including me) are generally hesitant to change its behavior unless it's
an obvious bug fix. If you don't object, I'm gonna close this bug as INVALID.

Ah.. another thing to note. If your odd isn't on the same controller as your
harddisk, you might as well give a shot at libata driver. You can select it in
yast hardware menu. It's usually named like [p]ata_something. This will
change your cdrom from /dev/hda to /dev/sr0 but you can use it the same way and
the sr driver will retry on media errors.
