Summary: rt73usb module is too experimental
Product: openSUSE 10.2
Version: Final
Platform: i686
OS/Version: SuSE Other
Status: NEW
Severity: Normal
Priority: P5 - None
Component: Kernel
AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
ReportedBy: fmfischer@xxxxxxx
QAContact: qa@xxxxxxx

I had to learn that the included rt73usb module should better be blacklisted:

1.

Firmware is not included anyway and there is no warning it's not
there when loading the module.

2.

This module is highly instable and brings the adapter to virtual
standstills on various machines (and various distros), only way
out then: replug the adapter. Only good news: it doesn't bring
down the whole system.

3.

During uptimes the performance bounces between 1/3 and 1/10 of the
net speed one gets when either booting the same machine into
Windows or into any ndiswrapper configuration.

I understand that for situations where one needs to shuffle a few MBs
occasionally via WLAN, rt73usb might be sufficient. But in non-toy
situations?

Suggestion: blacklist the module
