https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=227421 Summary: irq_balancer in init.d doesn't start on a dual core cpu Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: All OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: peter.pinski@gmx.de QAContact: qa@suse.de A bug(?) in the irq_balancer init.d script hinders irqbalance to be started on my Dual Core AMD Athlon X2. The variable $PHYS in the script is assigned the value $(grep '^physical id' /proc/cpuinfo | sort -u | wc -l). On my cpu this means: For both cores there is the same physical ID, thus sort -u leaves one line. wc -l returns 1, as there is one newline character. However, line 40 says: if [ $PHYS -gt 1 ] || [ $PROC -gt 1 -a $PHYS -eq 0 ] ; then thus irqbalance isn't started though I have an SMP system. Changing line 40 in /etc/init.d/irq_balancer to if [ $PHYS -gt 1 ] || [ $PROC -gt 1 -a $PHYS -eq 1 ] ; then helps, it is now possible to start irqbalance via the inid.d script, while it returned "unused" before.
