The file where only 1400x1050 is specified is the one I manually edited to >only contain 1400x1050 (reasoning that if nothing else was specified it would >force the system to use it. Which it didn't). Right, this doesn't help since 1400x1050 was the first resolution also before.
xorg.conf.orig was the file generated during installation, not used during it. It is the version that existed after installation as /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Ok. I understand.
I have no idea which scenarios are described by the log files, as I don't know how the log files are organized/rotated. I included them as per the instructions on opensuse.org. The order in which I tried to start X is described in comment #1, with the possibility to have more than one attempt for a given configuration. Ok. Then you need to copy the different config files to xorg.conf, start the Xserver again and attach the according logfiles again. Please use for them the suffix of the config files, e.g. Xorg.0.log.xorg.conf.orig, etc. Thanks.
