I can start KDE, run xcompgr, then Gimp with a tranlucent image window, paint some gradients and nothing happens with the memory. Then I stop xcompmgr and enable transparent shadows (kompmgr starts up). From that on, the X server starts growing when I continue to paint gradients. Please note that this comparison xcompmgr/kompmgr is incomplete.
