Hello fellow artists We just created a new wiki where your wallpaper submissions for 12.2 can be entered. Please. if you are planning to submit a wallpaper for the next release, be sure to submit it at this wiki http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Wallpapers That way, your work will have a good place to be displayed and admired. After Jan 21, 2012, as a team, we will decided on the default wallpaper for the next release of openSUSE. The submissions shown side to side can also help many other artists to submit their wallpapers and also form a good art trend for the next release. PS: There is only one wallpaper there already, it is mine. I am still working on this wallpaper but I put it there for testing purposes. 2nd PART We feature a couple of links that can help artists know what type of copyright they can use for their artwork before submitting it. Please, if you use other type of licenses for your artwork, let us know, that way we can feature those as well. The idea is not to end up with complaints from other entities asking us to remove conflicting artwork because such artist does not own all the elements of his/her wallpapers. You can email the ML about licensing options. Also, be sure to encourage not only yourselves but your artist friends to submit artwork. The more the better. [opensuse-artwork] Design Challenge

I had an idea this morning about creating a design challenge for th artwork team. Tigerfoot mentioned that the slogan for the next release is "Show Me Your Tail." I think this could be a great theme for a wallpaper design challenge. However I would like to get some input from all of you. I think also we might need to do some work on our wiki to show the challenge page with all the submissions. Let me know if you would like to go ahead with a wallpaper challenge. My understanding of artwork neutrality, when being discussed in our community, fell into one of two contexts Version Neutrality - Should our artwork be 'version neutral', and therefore be suitable for reuse across multiple openSUSE versions, instead of remaking/redesigning totally new designs for each release? In this scenario, my opinion is both yes and no - I have no objection to version neutral artwork, but I prefer version specific, and if we have the people and time to do it, I think we should The other 'neutrality' I've seen discussed is 'Desktop Neutrality' - Should KDE and GNOME be 'forced' to use the same Artwork, given both desktops and their different environment might favour different designs? Personally, I feel we get this 'right' currently - we seem keen to pick a design that is easy to use across the distribution, but there seems no problem in minor alterations for specific needs (eg. different cropping for Grub menu, colour changing over time for GNOME, etc) I like the idea and think that we should have the freedom to have different designs in GNOME and KDE, but just because we *could* doesn't mean we *should*, and I think a unified core design being used differently across the distribution is a way to go. I am not sure what this means for the artwork team or if we should actually define our artwork neutrality. Hello, In the general meeting of yesterday evening we proposed to have a discussion about licencing. Some hints: * There are many licences in the wild : http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Accepted_licences * as long as "art" is involved (at least I know this for photography), there is an inalienable right for the author (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berne_Convention_for_the_Protection_of_Literar…) That said the problems of licencing of artwork are numerous. I could lead a similar discussion for documents for the LDP that had as result this licence page http://wiki.tldp.org/LdpWikiDefaultLicence The problems: * artwork is often difficult to label - how can we know who is the author? (exifs for photographs, but for drawings or logos or posters or flyers?) * there are often many authors for the same work * we do not have enough artists in openSUSE. As we don't have money to pay for some, we have to reward them. The minimum reward is to credit them of the work. Some solutions: * have a document in the distro/wiki... with the artwork authors name like in news papers * copy this document in the release notes What kind of licence Given we have many artworks in the distro/project, having various licences may lead to great difficulties. A very common licence is cc-by-sa. sa (share alike) may conflict with other licence, say GPL. If we have to make a document with both cc-by-sa artwork and gpl'ed artwork, is this allowed by the initial licence? by (credit) may also give problems: if we make a poster with lot of logos, where can we give credit for each author? So the best licence for the distribution is "cc" alone - with cc-by-sa with attribution of the hole result to the openSUSE project. [opensuse-artwork] General Meeting

Hello my friends A few weeks ago I sent out an email to request a meeting of the Artowork Team. The meeting was thought to happen after the release of 12.1 and I am happy to say that the artwork team did a tremendous work in making 12.1 a beautiful green distro. Now it would be a great time to get together as a team and discuss goals and ideals that we would like to have for the team. Our meeting will help us get to know each other, organize ourselves, and produce artwork with focus. This meeting could happen on IRC as it is a very standard method of communication. Since this is a correlation meeting, IRC will be more than enough to propose our ideas. I am now asking the team to set a date and a time when we can all (or as many as possible) can meet. I could come up with a minute for the meeting if necessary. Having meetings and discussions like this is just the sort of thing we need to get the ball rolling Once we've had a meeting I think a good next step would be to start taking concepts and initial submissions. (Do we have a date yet, I think I may have missed it in this thread?) I don't think we should be limiting ourselves with artificially defined concepts and concerns about colours Lets see what our contributors can submit and from there hopefully discussions about colour and a shared concept for various artwork would hopefully take shape > - Who can vote? When it comes to voting on submissions, concepts, or even colours, I have the following opinion I see the artwork team as being here to provide artwork for the openSUSE project and its community I feel we can decide a great deal of things among ourselves, and we have knowledge, skills and expertise that might lead us in a certain direction with the artwork we would like to see in the distribution (vector vs raster, any other colour vs green) But at the end of the day, we cannot act, nor be seen to act, like beings in some grand ivory tower Fundamentally, for our artwork to be 'successful', it must at the very least be accepted by the community, and to be a true success our chosen artwork must be accepted by 'the wider world', and be an eyecatching draw to grab another non-openSUSE user and encourage them to try our distribution. So I have no objection to us deciding much as a team, with group consensus, internal votes when no consensus is obvious, but any controversial decisions (such as a move from green) should have at least an openSUSE membership wide vote, and personally I'd prefer an open vote. We may have good reason to second guess the results of such a vote, and as a group we may reserve the right (with lots of public explanation why) to go with something different, but we really must seek a wider opinion than just our small group and be seeing to consider and have our work shaped by that opinion. We also cant forget that our artwork is going to have a great impact on some very specific teams, such as marketing, and I'd like to see this 12.2 round as an opportunity to improve collaboration between both groups. At the very least, the marketing team have a number of keen minds who could be a perfect 'focus group' to help us consider issues before bringing them to the wider community.
