I have a Dual Opteron with both SuSE9.3 & Fedora 3, SuSE being the default . Both are x86_64 versions. In splash screen, where we are asked to make choices for either the SuSE or Fedora, we have an additional option to make a choice for memory test.
However, when I choose memory test, then the screen goes blank and nothing happens. How can I get the memory test done?
Your help will be greatly appreciated.
-go to /boot
-look for a file named "memtest.bin"; if it doesn't exist, then that's the reason why memtest doesn't run, else check the file /boot/grub/menu.lst and ensure you have an entry like: "title memtest" kernel (hdX,Y)/memtest.bin
where X = # of disk (first disk is 0) and Y = # of partition where /boot is stored (first partition is 0)
-if you don't have file memtest.bin in /boot, install thru Yast the memtest rpm (should be memtest86-3.2.3), or go to http://www.memtest.org/ ,download the appropriate kit (the pre-compiled bootable binary - .gz), extract the archive, move the bin file to /boot, and add an entry in /boot/grub/menu.lst with a similar pattern as previously written, like: "title memtest86" kernel (hdX,Y)/memtest86+-1.60.bin
for X and Y values, apply the same values found for the entry "Suse Linux 9.3";
reboot, and test your memory...

I've got the same problem on five machines I've installed SuSE 9.1 to 9.3 - memtest does nothing. The entry on menu.lst is correct and memtest.bin exists on /boot. The problem is that the screen goes blank and all I see is a cursor that does not move. Nothing works until the reset button is pressed. I've found out that memtest works off the bootable DVD/CD but in my case never off the hard disk.
