Hi, I did some heavy test on my dual opteron Tyan S2882, 2x246, 4GB mem, suse/9. I have installed the latest beta bios (2882_2xxE) due to random lockups... I did "make -j20" for qt3 in chrooted gentoo, to use as much memory with g++ as possible. Toward the end of compilation, some commands (df, top, etc) stopped working (in suse). gdb /bin/df: Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault. 0x0000002a95817670 in __mpn_cmp () from /lib64/libc.so.6 All the commands crashed at the same place. These commands still worked in chrooted gentoo. If I set LD_LIBRARY_PATH in suse to gentoo's /lib64, the commands worked ok. Most of the servers (openafs, openldap, heimdal, postfix, cyrus-ldap, apache) survived. Only xntpd crashed... Finally, I have reinstalled glibc rpm, and the problem disapeared. The system now works OK without a reboot. Do you have any idea what could be wrong? glibc did not change on disk (rpm -V glibc). Is this a kernel bug or still a bios problem? At least, the machine did not freeze any more as with older bios. There were no kernel messages except something like, df[21280]: segfault at 0000000000000002 rip 0000002a956b6670 rsp 0000007fbfffdec8 error 6 versions: kernel: 2.4.21-201-smp glibc: glibc-2.3.2-90 Thanks, Andrej _____________________________________________________________ doc. dr.
