I am using Tyan Tiger K8W and GeForce4 MX440 (no brand), and having trouble at starting X. CPU and memory are Opteron240 x 2, and PC2700 x 2.
I could install SuSE 9 AMD64 without trouble, where I saw graphical installer running on KDE and SaX2 worked. However, once the system restarted, X-window does not work. I can only work with run-level 3.
Starting run-level 3, I tested 'startx' or so, but failed: KDE shows splash screen where progress of initiation is shown, but stop before changing user desktop. At this point, cursor followed the movement of the mouse, but keyboard did not work.
I suggested to use both BIOS and kernel options. I will try every combination of them.
It's more likely the X86Config file. It is in /etc/X11/XF86Config Read the man pages on XF86Config and figure out which driver you need to call for the GeForce chipset. You can also run the rescue disk and request it to set up the file for you.
His X server did start, otherwise he would not seen the KDE splash. Something is going wrong in the KDE startup. ~/.xsession-errors or /var/log/XFree86* may hold a clue. -Andi
