SuSE 8.2: X seems to cause system freezes
Hi, since installing SuSE 8.2 a couple of month ago I occassionally experience system freezes when performing certain tasks under X (e.g. watching certain pages with Mozilla, trying to turn off the background image in KDE, etc.). I already played around with the configuration (I attached the current config) but this didn't help. What else can I try? Can I downgrade to the XFree86 from SuSE 8.1? Felix, Is this a stock install of 8.2? Are you completely up to date? I ask this because the SLE had several emails about freezes and what not. But then a couple weeks ago they released a new package of the X server and I haven't seen any freezing complaints since. I would upgrade if you haven't. If you have then it could be something else. How about a complete list of the hardware in the machine. About the downgrading to 8.1's version. I would advise against it unless you want a who new slew of problems. Yes, and, BTW, I installed SuSE 8.2 three times on that machine (due to HD changes) but I had the same problems each time.

I just did another YOU update and made sure that all X-server related stuff gets updated. However, the problem persists.

I attached /var/log/boot.msg for a first overview. If more info is needed, let me know. However, I am almost certain that the problem is X server related because my system always freezes when something graphically is done (e.g. turning off the background image in KDE or visiting the logo competition pages on www.fvwm.org). I just had further support for that theory: I typed in www.fvwm.org in Mozilla, continued doing something else on another virtual screen, went back, and immediately the system freezed. So loading the page was not the problem, but displaying it.

Then what else can I do. It really sucks that I can't visit some of my favorite web pages and that, in general, I have to be very careful when surfing unknown pages on the web because I might experience a system freeze at any time. Buhuhu :( Felix -- To contact me in private don't reply but send mail to felix DOT klee AT inka DOT de

After you did the upgrades did you restart KDM since I see you start your machine at run level 5? If you do the upgrades inside KDE but just log out of KDE without restarting KDM then you've not loaded the new X server. KDM uses the X server to display if it's not restarted then you don't load the new fixes. -- Ben Rosenberg ---===---===---===--- mailto:ben@whack.org ----- If two men agree on everything, you can be sure that only one of them is doing the thinking.

I restarted the hard way: 1. sync 2. Visiting www.fvwm.org with Mozilla => Crash 3. Hard reset And, BTW, I use wdm, not kdm. But as I woke up this morning I had another idea: why not try another X-Server (not another version, though), e.g. the VESA one? I'll try that out in a minute and see if the crashes go away. Well, it seems to work with the VESA server (no crashes so far). But I have a font problem now: http://sites.inka.de/klee/suse/x-server-problems/kmail.jpg http://sites.inka.de/klee/suse/x-server-problems/mozilla.jpg Any ideas how to fix it? Have you tried to turn-off 3D and see if the problem goes away? If so then most likely it's the graphic card driver. -- -- Verdi March --

My card (Silicon Motion Lynx EM+ with 4MB of RAM) doesn't support 3D accelleration. But I'll try another X-Server (e.g. the VESA one) in a minute. Felix -- To contact me in private don't reply but send mail to felix DOT klee AT inka DOT de
