Regarding ATI cards.

I have an ATI 8500LE and NVIDIA GFORCE MX 440SE. Originally, I had the ATI installed and X was lousy. even drawing simple windows in X took forever and moving a window around the desktop had incredible lag. installing the ATI driver was an even bigger pain in the rear. ATI's installer was unable to unload/replace the current driver loaded in memory for the module. it didn't matter which runlevel i was in, I couldn't get the module unloaded to replace it. by contrast, NVIDIA's install went much smoother. from the start i experienced impeccable performance and installing the 3D drivers was a breeze. the lesson here? screw ATI! until they make more headway with their linux support, i'll never buy another ATI card again. it's NVIDIA all the way.
