[opensuse-usability] network mockups once again
Hi there, during the weekend I rethought my network settings module mock-ups and made new ones. http://en.opensuse.org/YaST/Network_Card_Module The new mock-ups base on the following assumptions: * The goal of the module is to set up basic network settings * The following personas may use the module: ** Carla, a student, who uses openSUSE on his laptop and often needs to change between different configurations ** Mike, a sysadmin, who uses openSUSE in a network and needs to do a lot of configuration ** Thomas, a pupil, who uses openSUSE to connect himself to the internet via his network card. I draw the following conclusions: * Thomas doesn`t want to bother himself with the network settings, so he just hopes that the recommended settings are sufficient to allow him to connect his DSL modem * Mike is happy, that openSUSE offers him such a detailled configuration, but he doesn`t want to do the configuration all the time * Carla is a non-technical user, so she needs to switch between the profiles very easily. These conclusion imply: * the network settings should allow the user to use automatic IP address setup via DHCP and automatic DNS selection per default or maybe via a profile called "Broadband/DSL" or something * profiles can be easily applied and selected either to switch between different network settings to spare time while making a new one (no body likes to do nearly the same work twice and this reduces the amount of possible errors as well). What do you think about that concept? As always I am looking forward to your comments! Enjoy, Martin PS: Will, I will really try to talk to you this week about the Network Manager stuff :-) --------------- Martin Schmidkunz User Experience Specialist martin.schmidkunz@novell.com +49 (0) 911 740 53-346 Novell, Inc. A few quick thoughts and questions: * How exactly will the profiles work? I can see the usecase for when you switch between locations and don't want to enter the same things, but will a profile be compulsory to get things working? * I'm not sure that it's instantly clear in http://files.opensuse.org/opensuse/en/f/f6/Nw_settings_devices.png that the 'Configure Network Card Device' button configures the currently-selected item (since there is other options and text in between it and the selection area). I see part of the problem though: the configure profile button needs to go below the profile selection part, and having one button above the text and one below is messy. Hmm. On a more minor issue -- overuse of borders? There are dangers with it; hm, Jimmac had a nice link somewhere I believe. be warned than some DSL HW (USB, for example) needs specific configuration, but most don't at all (net gateway, routers boxes) In the past I héve seen many users _destroy_ they configuration trying to configure with the DSL menu when it was not necessary. so there should be no DLS reference if no DSL HW is present in the computer jdd -- http://www.dodin.net Cécile, esthéticienne à Montpellier (à domicile) http://gourmandises.orangeblog.fr/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-usability+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-usability+help@opensuse.org

Good, because I can add at least one other persona: ** Will, spare time admin, who wants the family laptop to work with the home wireless network no matter which of the configured users picks it up, but also wants it to be able work with foreign networks when it is out of the house, without the users having root. This can be done with NetworkManager. It's not a new issue Michal -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-usability+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-usability+help@opensuse.org

Probably need some re-wording on this one; http://en.opensuse.org/Image:041007_networkcard_global_generalsettings.png I don't have a mobile workstation and I don't have a server, what should I pick? :-)
Bye, Michal

Try to refresh now ;-) I think now it's ok: - NetworkManager for mobiles and NetControl for others

Does not matter. Any choice should be OK. Where do you read something about "server"? -- ciao, christian 睡眠不足はいい仕事の敵だ。 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-usability+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-usability+help@opensuse.org
