SuSE Help System and Apache2
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Does the SuSE Help System work on Apache2? I don't know why YaST installed Apache2 on my system, but after it did, I get the Apache default index.html, not the SuSE page that points to the documentation. I use that documentation, and I use the url to get to it. I want that functionality back. Do I simply need to uninstall apache2 (and perhaps reinstall apache 1.3), or can I do something to make it work with apache2? The latter option is more attractive, if it's straightforward. Steve I have Apache2, mysql, php etc running on SL9.0Pro. There doesn't appear to be any problem with SuSE Help. What exactly are you doing when the problem is exhibited? -- Best Regards David Barnes

I'm not sure what you mean. There are two interfaces to SuSE's help system. One is based on the KDE help center, the other is served out by Apache. Perhaps I'm one of the few who actually use that feature, and SuSE want to phase it out, or something. I hope not. But I don't see it in the documentation for 9.0. What I mean is that I use both help systems, KDE help center and the Apache served one for Apache documentation - and they appear to work. In fact, I use the Apache documentation system a lot. I see no evidence of SuSE doing anything to it, except for supplying it as part of the RPM. My original question was, what doesn't work for you? I would like to help. -- Best Regards David Barnes

No, he wants the full help system as in kde, working from apache - not simply the apache docus. This has worked in all versions of SuSE as far as I remember (5.2), but I think it doesn't with apache2. It was mentioned on this list not too long ago. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

NOW I understand! and yes, it doesn't work for me either. Afraid I can't help, but I would like to use it as well. I shall watch this thread with interest. I, too, would like to see a solution. -- Best Regards David Barnes

Include the susehelp configuration by adding "/etc/httpd/susehelp.conf" to APACHE_CONF_INCLUDE_FILES in /etc/sysconfig/apache2, restart apache, and let me know if that helps. Don't forget to edit /etc/sysconfig/susehelp. Peter

Worked like a charm as far as getting the help system running. While I was installing Apache2 I read a comment saying: "prefork" MPM (Multi-Processing Module) This MPM is basically the one that Apache 1.3.x used. It warrants the maximum stability because each server runs in its own process. If a process dies it will not affect other servers. Which I never knew. I guess 1.3 and 2 aren't that different. I never tried. I just knew everything worked with Apache 1.3 and it didn't with 2 so I reverted. But I still don't have a dancing penguin! :-( I'l also observe that I had to yank out all the 1.3 related modules to prevent rpm conflicts. I don't know what, if anything I really lost. This server isn't important, but I have one that matterrs a bit more. I think I'll have to aim before I shoot with that one. In some respects they are very different, but not visibly to the user. Most changes are confined to the internals that you'd not notice.

Yoy mean the old dancing penguin that was on the default index.html very long ago? I believe we have ditched it due to unclear copyright long ago, but if it's still there it is in the apache-example-pages package (the one of apache1).

A few modules do conflict (mod_perl, mod_python). Most don't.

Don't worry. If you need help, it counts as a bug which needs to be resolved. Let me know. Peter

There have always been errors like these on susehelp, on every suse version. Mistake, previous versions had less errors. I had to pursue them one by one, each time. The bad news is: they are never the same on each version. The other bad news (for you): I have not 9.0, so I can not solve it for you :-P Hopefully, I'm wrong, and those errors are just of your system, and not general; or they are general, and somedy else have found and solved them. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

Carlos, Patrick Sorry, I wasn't clear. The SuSEhelp (from kde) works perfectly. The problem is with menus using the http version in Apache. The lower level menus bomb out with a 404 error. You can tell that is going to happen because when you "hover" over the link, the parameters for the cgi script are wrong. I would have expected the parameters to be non-blank and different for each link. In the kde SuSE Help, the "Administration" link, for example is "khelpcenter:woq7KKJBRTSLaQ" and in Apache is "http://localhost/cgi-bin/showdir.cgi?cgiprefix=/cgi-bin/ &fileprefix=&header=1&path=" The link for the User Guide in kde is "file:/usr/share/doc/packages/suselinux-userguide_en/html/index.html (52.24 K) HTML Page" which I understand, and in Apache is "file:/usr/share/doc/packages/suselinux-userguide_en/html/index.html" which works. -- Best Regards David Barnes

I know, I know. As I said, I don't have 9.0, so I can't check; but those kind of errors in the apache version vs the kde version of help have always been around. That's exactly what I meant. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

I'm not sure which level of user you mean. I haven't had time to follow Apache much. I've been tracking Tomcat and Java's WSDP, as well as a lot of other related stuff. That is until the Qt book came out. Then I dropped everything and started selfinflicting C++ again.
I believe we have ditched it due to unclear copyright long ago, but if it's still there it is in the apache-example-pages package (the one of apache1).
It was kind of handy to have the SuSE-built index.html with all the links, and information about the install, etc. Sure, I can make my own, but if I don't have to, that would save some time.
Don't worry.
If you need help, it counts as a bug which needs to be resolved. Let me know.
It will probably not be soon. I have a pretty solid background in managing webservers going back to Netscape SuiteSpot beta 1. That doesn't mean I never need help, but it's not that complex. I'll keep the offer in mind. I'm glad SuSE implemented my suggestion about linking in user configuration files to prevent editing /etc/httpd/httpd.conf. :-)
