We've got a bit of trouble with a new install of SuSE 8.2 - no network. The machine in question was previously running WinXP with no problems, has two network cards, a Realtek and another I can't remember the name of off the top of my head (I'm sticking with the Realtek for the moment as I've several of them and know they work well under Linux). SuSE installs without any errors, correctly detects the cards and sets them up. Everything bar networking (and an ancient SCSI card we've pulled out to eliminate it as a cause of this problem) works fine. The network is set up correctly, a very simple setup using static IPs on a private block, a single default gateway and, currently, a crossover cable straight from the network card to the default gateway. ifconfig shows the network interface up, with the correct IP and netmask. route also shows the local network and default routes correctly. However, when I try to ping 192.168.0.1 (the gateway), I get network unreachable. We've also tried connecting it to another machine, using the second network card and tested all hardware bar the NICs themselves between other machines. IPChains has not been enabled (it's a vanilla, freshly installed SuSE 8.2 desktop). Everything suggests the network should_ be working - but it isn't. I've never seen this behaviour from a Linux box before. Can anyone shed some light? TIA -- Geoff Beaumont Geoff@stormhammer.com
