RE: [SLE] X terminal on Windows?
vnc every time for me - it's on the SuSE disks too. -----Original Message----- From: cwinter [SMTP:root@winterworks.dhs.org] Sent: Thursday, October 28, 1999 10:43 AM To: suse-linux-e@suse.com Subject: [SLE] X terminal on Windows? There is a product that used to be free. It now costs $25.00 after the evaluation period. I have not played with it myself, but I told a sysop friend about it back in it's vsn 1 days (when it was free) and he said it did work on his winblows 95 boxes at work to access X on a sun server. It is called "MI/X 2.0 for Windows : A Professional, X Server for Windows" the URL is: http://www.microimages.com/mix/ Hey, for 25 bucks how could you possibly go wrong? Except for the fact that Win"blows-up" is involved. Hi all Is it possible to disable keyboard temporarily? Has anyone done this before? I would be very appreciate if you could share with your valuable solution or idea on how to go about doing that. Unplug it :) Other than that, I haven't heard of anything. Kevin P.S. If you all couldn't tell by the number of my posts today, it's been a _REAL SLOW_ day at work!

Can't he just press ^s (or similar) to stop output and input of the keyboard, or is that the wrong approach? hope this helps mfg, Alex

It's quite possible. Also, it's Linux, there is no such thing as a
"wrong approach" :) (Well, I suppose that if you end up formatting
all your partitions or something, then it might be the wrong
approach)
On the Linux box here, ^s has the same effect as the "Scroll Lock".
When it's on, the keyboard still accepts input, it just doesn't send
it until the scroll lock is turned off.
If we're talking about an actual lock, where the keyboard will not
accept ANY input, I don't see any solution other than a physical lock
like Tim just pointed out in his e-mail. If you use a key combination
to lock the keyboard, how would you unlock it? You wouldn't be able
to use key combinations, because the keyboard would not respond.
However, I imagine that the person is looking for a pseudo-type lock,
that will only respond to a certain key combination, and "unlock" the
keyboard. I'd bet that it's possible, but the closest I know of is
locking your terminal, and unlocking it by entering your password.

The best solution I could think of would be to make a small C program, which traps all special keys and otherwise does nothing but wait for a certain key combination. The special keys you need to trap are Alt-Fx, Alt-Right and Left, Ctrl-Alt-Del, Ctrl-C, and possibly a few others. I don't know exactly how to do this, but it ought to be pretty simple for a programmer. The psudocode would look something like: Start KeyUnlockCombo=whatever Setup trapping of special key combos. Repeat Keys=getkeys Until Keys=KeyUnlockCombo End If you have a network, another option could be to compile the keyboard as a module and then telnet in and rmmod the keyboard. then you could telnet in and insmod the keyboard again when you need it. This method requires the following: 1) that the keyboard can be compiled as a module. (I really don't know if it can) 2) that the module can be unloaded when it is in use. (again, I don't know) 3) that you don't use autoloading of modules. (I don't know if you do, but I know that it can be disabled.) However, I still think the best option would be the small program, unless you need to disable the keyboard from another computer. Nixien, I believe you can edit the /etc/securetty file to set which tty's can be used for root access. Check the man page for securetty. To some extent, you can "disable" the keyboard in the sense that this way you can limit the terminals that can be used to log in from. Nitebirdz On Fri, 29 Oct 1999, nixien wrote:
