Fwd: Chat Script: NO CARRIER
Hi All, One of my routers is giving me a weird error. I'm setting up a dial out capability using pppd with ppp-on and ppp-off scripts. The weirdness occurs when I try to dial out. The first time the script connects flawlessly. The second connection attempt fails when Chat reports 'NO CARRIER'. The odd thing is it never even tried to dial. As I understand it, 'NO CARRIER' is error that occurs when the modem on the other end hangs up unexpectedly. Why would I get a 'NO CARRIER' error before the connection is even made. If I retry the connection attempt, it agains work flawlessly. The only clue I have is that the first connect leaves the HS indicator lit on my USR V.everything modem when it hangs up. Then the second attempt fails but does manage to turn off HS. The the third attempt works fine. Can someone give some clue as to what's happening here? Thanks. I would suggest you look at the docs for your modem. ATZ may not be enough to reset it. If you start minicom after the first dialout and try sending ATZ, does the modem respond with OK? My guess would be no. regards Anders

I carefully set minicom's init string to null and then started minicom after one successful connection. What I receive immediately from the modem is 4 or 5 junk characters followed by ARRIER, i.e., "..:..ARRIER". It seems as if this is a string left over in the modem's memory which it sends immediately upon access. Sending atz clears the HS indicator and the modem responds OK. What do you think? Thanks. Tom
Anders, In fact, if I insert an ATZ *before* the ABORT strings, the second connection works just fine: [~] cat chat/isp #!/bin/bash # chat script for isp # exec /usr/sbin/chat -V \ '' ATZ \ TIMEOUT 5 \ ABORT 'NO CARRIER' \ ABORT 'NO ANSWER' \ ABORT 'NO DIALTONE' \ ABORT 'BUSY' \ ABORT 'ERROR' \ OK ATZ \ OK ATDT714-8828 \ TIMEOUT 60 \ CONNECT ''

Hi All,
At a guess, because Modems have been my specialist topic for 17 years now...

AND: No carrier is also the sign that NO CONNECTion can be made. depends on the settings.

Thanks. Run minicom. Set speed to 2.4kbps. Send "ATZ0". The "HS" on the VE should be OFF Set speed to 19.2kbps or above. Do the same. HS should now be ON.
Check and get back to us on what happens. I'd be happy to help you out. Otherwise: Seeing the "HS" in wrong indication makes me think of trying another serial cable. Check that also.
