You are right, but it should be possible without '____'. If you install kdebase from the repository above, you can´t use kdesu with parameters i.e. kdesu -c smart --gui. Without kdesu, it is possible i.e. smart --gui. I think it is a bug and kdesu should replaced with a newer version than 1.0. Otherwise you has to chance every line in the menu, in which you use kdesu. It is the way to invoke 'smart --gui' from normal user konsole. According to the man page (openSUSE 10.2): <quote> SYNOPSIS kdesu [-c] [-d] [-f file] [-i icon name] [-n] [-p priority] [-r] [-s] [-t] [-u user] [--nonewdcop] [command [arg1] [arg2] [...]] .... -c program This specifies the program to run as root. It has to be passed in one argument. So if, for example, you want to start a new file manager, you would enter at the prompt: kdesu -c kfm -sw </quote> Where the text and example don't tell the same. The example is based on SYNOPSIS, and text tells: kdesu -c 'kfm -sw' which is how it actually works. -- Regards, Rajko. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Thank you, Rajko, for your reply but I do not use the SuSE version of smart - I have the "real" smart installed. It is for this "real" smart version that I was hoping to get the name of the control file where the parameter needs to be changed for the latest kdesu to execute without the error message re smart's Package Manager. I guess now I would need to ask this question in the smart forum - unless you, or someone else - knows the answer to my question. (BTW, smart's Package Update Checker works correctly.) kdesu is a KDE utility, not belonging to smart. smart requires root permissions to execute file changes and gets that via kdesu. bash normally divides command line units/parameters via white space, in order to make kdesu's command line parameters, smart AND --gui, appear as a single unit, they must be contained in ' or " 's.
I guess now I would need to ask this question in the smart forum - unless you, or someone else - knows the answer to my question.
good luck, it is not a "smart" problem.
(BTW, smart's Package Update Checker works correctly.)
doesn't require elevated (root) permissions. The kdebase source in 10.2 and 10.3 (factory) source is the same kdebase3-3.5.5-78.src.rpm // Get command if (args->isSet("c")) { command = args->getOption("c"); for (int i=0; i<args->count(); i++) { QString arg = QFile::decodeName(args->arg(i)); KRun::shellQuote(arg); command += " "; command += QFile::encodeName(arg); } } There is change to kdesu.cpp, but it doesn't change this piece of code, but changes in #include may affect it. In any case 10.2 and 10.3 are the same. Actually, the sound of "moxnix" is very close to some dialects.

"Machts nichts", just as "it doesn't matter", is often used after someone made mistake, as a sign of forgiveness. Basil claimed, it has "real" Smart, and Patric's "moxnix" made me laugh: "It is forgiven, Basil. Thank you for the answer. I just want to say, that after an update of kdesu(kdebase), you have to chance the line in kmenuedit manually. I thought, it could be the bug described in the kde bugtracking. Albert Am Samstag, 22. September 2007 18:08:05 schrieb Michael Ayers:

No, you don't, but you *do* need to follow the instructions you have been given. make a desktop link containing the following action: kdesu "smart --gui" roots password will be requested and the smart GUI will open. then you can even add a keyboard shortcut and not have to access the icon. -- Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://counter.li.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I wonder why one can't launch smart anymore from the kde-menu. In the past I always called smart from the menu.
