Scanning Problem (was YaST insanity)

Hi,
I have a really weird problem...
Just got an Epson Perfection 1260 Photo scanner, which is said to be fully supported by SANE, according to the SANE home page. That's the good news. The bad news is that unless I use version 1.0.10 or higher of SANE, I can BREAK my scanner, even with the correct driver! I am running SuSE 8.1, which has the 1.0.8 version. (I caught this just as I was about to scan my first image! (Whew!)
First, I tried downloading SANE's own tarballed version 1.0.12. The build, make, and install went OK, but when I tried to remove 1.0.8, YaST complained bitterly. I ignored it, but then when I tried xsane, IT complained that SANE was not properly installed. Guessing that there is something odd about the SuSE version that YaST handles, I got rid of the 1.0.12 version.
Second, I tred downloading the SuSE RPM (SANE 1.0.10) from the SuSE 8.2 ftp site. I first was unable to change my installation medium to my home directory to install the package. So then I tried rpm -i blahblah.rpm. I got a message that the package could
"not be installed". Using --install got the same result.
How can I either (a) get YaST to behave or (b) install the software I need so YaST will realize that SANE IS installed and I can configure my scanner or (c) find a how-to that will tell me how to do manually whatever YaST is set up to do? YaST is blocking me at the software installation level and I am sure will block me at the configuration level even if I do get the software installed.
Thanks in advance.

Hi, My scanner (Benq S2W 4300U) works fine now, thanks to SANE 1.0.12 which I found in *.rpm-format at: http://packman.links2linux.de/ It might work. /Lars Steve Miller wrote:

Hi, Lars, Thanks. That rpm at least installed, though it turns out that there are dependencies (e.g., resmgr) required for sane that are peculiar to SuSE 8.2 vis-a-vis 8.1 (my system). This does at least let me know that YaST (but for the changing media bit) and RPM are working on my system. I was able to install sane 1.0.12 via "yast -i blahblah.rpm". The dependencies were revealed on a subsequent startup of yast. In the meantime, I'm hunting for an RPM of sane 1.0.10 or 1.0.12 that does NOT require anything absent or unavailable from the SuSE 8.1 distro. If anyone knows of one, please let me know. (Nothing useful came up on rpmfind or the SANE website.) Otherwise, if converting a tarball to an rpm is easy and you know how off the top of your head, please drop me a line. Otherwise, it's a race between my ability to chase down how-tos in my limited free time and my ability to get SuSE 8.2 or a different scanner. Take home lesson: when investigating scanner support, GO TO THE DRIVER"S LINK on the SANE website -- BEFORE purchasing -- in case of unpleasant surprises like mine. You could try to work on this model -- 1. Read the RPM-HOWTO in /usr/share/doc 2. Install the 8.1 src rpm for sane 3. Put your new tarball in /usr/src/packages/SOURCES in place of the tarball that came from the src rpm 4. cd /usr/src/packages/SPECS; rpm -ba sane.spec 5. Fix any patch/compile/install errors and repeat 4. 7. Fix your SPEC file to include any new files 8. repeat 4 9. install your shiny new rpm 10. test your rpm on a clean machine according to the HOWTO before rolling out to other machines But in my experience I have found that, though not difficult, building an rpm is harder than compiling and 'make install'ing a tarball. When I wanted USB support for my UMAX 2200 on SuSE Linux 7.3, I took the opposite (cheats) tack :- 1. Read the RPM-HOWTO in /usr/share/doc 2. Install the 8.1 src rpm for sane 3. cd /usr/src/packages/SOURCES; 4. Open the SPEC file in emacs 5. Paste the appropriate scripts from the spec file into a bash xterm (this will patch, build + install the new sane) 6. Fix any compile / install errors (I don't think there were any in this case - but I was just lucky that SuSE's scanner architecture didn't change much from 7.3 to 8.1) 6. Test and forget about it. AFAIR I upgraded from sane 1.0.7(?) to 1.0.10 this way. My method does not give me a shiny rpm at the end. I was also lucky that when I upgraded my base system to 8.2 (cool new CDs and cool T-shirt) yast2 upgraded sane cleanly to the 8.2 rpm (which has a nicer xsane) Hope this helps. David.
