Hi all.. I've been reading about the Yast1 / 2 problem. Let me ask a question. For example, if I buy a copy of SuSE 8.0 and burn copies to give away, that's OK, right? What if I charged only for my costs? Or what if I sell the same copies to guys downunder for say double my cost, ie about 20 euro. Is this OK? If not, why not? Heck the Aussies on the list were moaning about the price. I could burn just the 7 disks and mail them there for around 20-25 euro. What's stopping me? BTW, I just got a burner <G>. That seems to be the definition of "commercial" so you'd probably hear from our lawyer.
Or what if I sell the same copies to guys downunder for say double my cost, ie about 20 euro. Is this OK? If not, why not?
Please read the license.

The above plus you'd be violating the licenses of the commercial software in the pay series. Look, if this is anything other than good old fashioned trolling please contact partner@suse.de with these sorts of questions...this is not an appropriate topic for this list.
BTW, I just got a burner <G>.
Great. Of course you can burn as many copies as you want (excluding the pay series) and give them away as Christmas gifts (complete with hardcopies of the handbook). -- -ckm

(...) AFAICT nothing, since the 20 to 25 € might just cover the media, the port (it's 16 Deutschmarks airmail to somewhere on the other side of the world, equaling 8.18€ now), and for your work time and burner wear, already next to nothing is remaining, so no conflicts with GPL to be assumed:-) Cheers ..... The GPL would allow you to sell it for $1000, but YaST isn't under the GPL. The wording of the YaST license is slightly odd. It says "for payment" (gegen Entgelt) which to my mind wouldn't even allow you to charge for the media, let alone the time spent doing it. Perhaps not even P&P. //Anders

I wrote SuSE to ask them a similar question. Here is the response I received: ---------- Forwarded Message ---------- Subject: Ticket [20020122900002330] Date: Tue, 22 Jan 2002 20:36:30 +0100 (CET) From: SuSE GmbH <suse@suse.de> To: joines@joines.okstate.edu
I have purchased SuSE Linux Professional versions 7.1, 7.2, and 7.3. I have made ISO images of the CDs for my own use. There seems to be some debate on the SuSE Linux Users mailing list as to whether or not it is legal for someone to distribute their ISOs. The general consensus seems to be that it is legal as long as there is no charge. Am I allowed to distribute my ISOs for free?
YES you are 101% correct. As soon as you distribute for commercial purposes, i.e. cash, then you are required to pay a licensing fee.

I've been following this thread, and I have an additional question. If I have a PC for sale, and I had previously loaded SuSE on it, must I remove the OS before selling the PC. May I advertise that this machine is "Pre Loaded" with SuSE ? Thanks, Ron -- Ron Joffe rjoffe@yahoo.com
