Hi Bob, Two reasons you might not get an answer: 1. No one knows the answer 2. You didn't give enough information about your problem. If you think 2 might apply, try re-phrasing your question, and/or providing more information, e.g. error messages, which desktop icon you're referring to above, which desktop you're using (I'm guessing Gnome, which I don't use, so can't help much more) Bob -- Bob Williams System: Linux 3.1.9-1.4-desktop Distro: openSUSE 12.1 (x86_64) with KDE Development Platform: 4.7.2 (4.7.2) "release 5" Uptime: 10:04 up 2:07, 3 users, load average: 0.40, 0.47, 0.25 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Hi Bob, Did you upgrade or perform a fresh install? Is this a 64-bit system? Have you tried to Google 'opensuse and gnome 3 and screensaver preferences' to locate others having the same issue (possibly locating a 'solved' thread in the process?) Have you confirmed all updates / patches are current? The reason I ask these questions is you haven't provided any background on the system or steps that you've already taken to resolve the problem. As a self-described "newbie" these are basic kinds of things you provide to the list when asking questions. hth & regards, Carl -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Sorry for the lack of info. Fresh install and 32 bit, version 12.1 All updates and patches are current. Did not Google what you suggested as I'm a bit timid of trying things in Google and Suse since I'm a newbie. May have to change that .

Tried to install the screensavers by clicking the desktop icon (Gnome) and got the error message :
Details: Failed to execute child process"gnome-screensavers- preferences" (No such filer or directory)
Didn't try anything else after that cause I really don't know what it means or what to try. Rather back off and ask than mess

Hi The screensaver is deprecated in GNOME 3.x, soon one may arrive which AFAIK will be a clutter/mutter one. Until then it's a blank screen.... -- Cheers Malcolm °¿° (Linux Counter #276890) SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 11 (x86_64) Kernel 3.0.13-0.27-default up 11:15, 2 users, load average: 0.00, 0.01, 0.05 CPU Intel i5 CPU M520@2.40GHz | Intel Arrandale GPU -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Until then it's a blank screen.... OK That solves the problem for now. Maybe in version 12.4 will
