does anybopy have any experience with SuSe 8.1/8.2 and S-ATA controllers from e.g. Adaptec and/or Promise ? I'm using a 2.4.21 kernel because I had hangs when I enabled SATA with the 2.4.20 that comes with 8.2. Can I assume that you had to compile this kernel yourself ?
Yes but you may not need to. I had to recompile it because of my video driver (and perhaps I didn't need to do that but it seemed the safest way to ensure the source matched the running kernel when I built the driver). There are various kernels at ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/mantel/next/RPM and one may suit you (but I'm not an expert so you'll need to get advice from someone else :). Be aware, they're development versions and change every few days. I'd guess that 2.4.21 will be the kernel in 8.3 (does anybody know?). It might be better to wait for that if you're nervous.
