It is late here, so just pointers. It is very similar. Basically ext2 + journal + few new functions = ext3. Turn off journal and it is almost ext2. You can search: http://lists.opensuse.org for "undelete ext3" and there will be a lot of hits. Basic is until you find out how to do that keep your external disk off line.
