Hello, Maybe a little off-topic, but what are essential files to backup a Suse-machine, besides user-files ? The whole /etc ? Anything else ? B.T.W. it's running 8.1-pro, DNS, DHCP, Samba (with Winbind). TIA. -- Met vriendelijke groeten, Koenraad Lelong R&D Manager ACE electronics n.v.

I do only backup the user-homes and the config files in /etc that needed to be changed manually. I wouldn't backup any of those that you did not need to tweak, because they are created during installation and will automagically be filled with the correct stuff when you reinstall.

Well, you should backup the relating config-files then. I actually wrote a script once that'll backup the all the important stuff to a server and after a clean install I'd get that script via scp and start it on the new SuSE-installation. It would then get all the backuped files and change quite a few config files in /etc (files that only needed adding some lines, like crontab). After it was finished I would have an almost identical copy of the old machine, but with a fresh system underneath. regards, Hansen -- Powered by SuSE 8.1pro - KDE 3.0.3 - KMail 1.4.3 At least, try asking smart questions: http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html "A computer without a Microsoft operating system is like a dog without bricks tied to its head." - Anonymous

/home /etc /var/lib/mysql /var/lib/named -- altho you may consider backing up the whole of /var/lib and /var/adm if you have the space. /usr/local -- if you have locally installed stuff that may be hard to replace. I find 'backup2l' the most usable solution, and also, if its between servers, using rsync. -- GPG fingerprint = 3D45 5509 D380 26A4 523E A9D8 A66A 5F38 CA43 BB0E
