[opensuse] openSUSE Mirrors and p2p for easier ISO distribution
Hello, I thought you might be interested in the Metalinks for openSUSE, which are automatically generated by one of your mirrors (http://ftp.iasi.roedu.net/) at http://download.packages.ro/metalink/opensuse/. Metalinks are really useful for large files like ISOs and contain all mirror and p2p locations along with checksums and other metadata. I've attached one (edited, doesn't contain all mirrors), its an XML file and is pretty self explanatory, but there are two good descriptions here: http://torrentfreak.com/metalinker-integrating-http-ftp-and-p2p/ 'We've all seen those download pages where a couple of http, ftp and bittorrent mirrors are listed. We often just pick one of these, but wouldn't it be great if you could use them all at the same time? Metalinker has the solution. It works like this, the .metalink file tells your download manager where it can get the file, and connects to these different sources at the same time.' http://www.downloadsquad.com/2006/08/28/metalinks-integrated-bittorrent-http -and-ftp-downloads/ Right now, Metalinks are used by OpenOffice.org and a few smaller Linux distributions. I think they could be useful to you too. Metalinks are supported by a number of download managers on Unix, Mac, and Win. There are 2 for unix, a command line version (http://aria2.sourceforge.net/) and one with a GUI. If you have any questions, please contact me. hi, JFYI download.opensuse.org and software.opensuse.org are doing redirecting to mirrors aswell. darix -- openSUSE - SUSE Linux is my linux openSUSE is good for you www.opensuse.org --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Why redirect instead of CNAME?
1. It allows the redirector to check beforehand if a given file is on a mirror before redirection. This is especially helpful if not all mirrors are synced yet. 2. CNAME would force all mirrors to have the same directory structure. 3. You can even play tricks with RAM caching of the mirrors: Some mirrors only get requests for a subset of files which fit in RAM together at the same time. because not all servers match our paths. and the redirecotor takes into account which mirror has which file. and it sends you to a local mirror if possible. darix -- openSUSE - SUSE Linux is my linux openSUSE is good for you www.opensuse.org --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
