It is a strange state of affairs, to be sure. Did you say he has the exact same .bashrc and .bash_login/.bash_profile as everybody else?

You may want to check his ~/.profile also - it turns out that is read after .bashrc and a prompt could be set in that file. ~~~~~ Thanks for the tip. I'll be checking that out.
