This is a followup to the last message. It turns out that the attachment is actually in MS Word 2000. (Not WordPerfect.) It looks like the formatting has a large left-hand margin, and the words on the right run off the page. Somehow, I managed to get the file up on OO so I could read it all, and if I varied the width of the window, the sentences would reformat so all the words were available. BUT if I hit the "print" button, the file was still truncated, and the right hand side of the page was gone. I can't seem to find a way to set margins in OO--maybe that would help. Or if there is a "reformat" command, what is it? Is there a handbook for OO that I could get at the local bookstore? (I really don't want to print 300 or more pages on my local printer!) I would be happy to forward the nasty file to someone who would tell me how to fix it, and then hopefully I could fix all files that seem to be nasty. On another note, a friendly fellow named Bandicot (I think) said try to use KWord in KOffice7. I can find no reference to that in either of the manuals, or by doing whereis. So I went to Google, and there is a KOffice 1.2.1-7 RPM for RedHat. Is this the program I should try? Will the RH RPM work OK on SuSE? (I thought that RH did not support KDE???) I've been playing with Linux for at least 7 years, and I'm still a newbie. So sue me. --doug

You might try saving the file, and then printing from the saved file. (committing the changes ....) -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org HOG # US1244711 Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/photos

KOffice and KWord are both available in SuSE distros 9.0, 9.1, 9.2, and KWord is available in 8.0, 8.1 and, perhaps earlier. I do not use it so memory fails (probably age related). ps. do not cross distros with rpms unless you rebuild them. I don't think redCap supports anything without long...green. -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org HOG # US1244711 Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/photos

Where is KOffice and KWord? I can't find either of them. The suggestions from Pat Shanahan to try and save the file in OO after making it readable did not work. Even tho I can make the file readable on screen, I can not make a printable version, for some reason.

In the last 10 minutes, it turns out I can't open OO at all any more. When I snap on the Office icon, the little blue thing bobs up and down for about 30 seconds and then stops. And nothing further happens.

Where did you look? I found them on CD1/suse/i586 hint: man pin

believe that I would restart kde and, if oo still will not start, run the install/repair function for oo. -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org HOG # US1244711 Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/photos

Hey Doug! That's Bandicoot! My BandiPat is taken from the game Crash Bandicoot for the PS2. We kinda got hooked on the games after winning a PS2 machine! ;o) Anyway, as Patrick mentioned, the KOffice programs are generally a default install with KDE on SuSE. Unless you didn't install KDE or you chose not to install KOffice, it should be on your system now. There is in fact a very good book for StarOffice/OpenOffice available called StarOffice 6.0 Office Suite Companion. It may be updated now, I haven't looked for a newer one, but even this one should be adequate for your needs. It covers both, since both are pretty much the same anyway. Again as Patrick mentions, so will I, don't mix distro RPMS. Some will work, yes, but avoid it if possible. You could try opening the file with KWord to see if it handles the file better, but OOo should do a good job normally. Also, you have Abiword available to you that does a good job with MS files. Cheers, Lee
