I have a on Intel on board sound card with 2.1 speakers. There one output for sound . But when I play a song there no bass on the output . I know the 2.1 speakers work . Well it helps if you let us know if you are running Gnome or KDE because there are different sound capabilities and controls with each. Also, is it a lap top, desktop, or what? Basically, you are looking for a mixer utility, which will allow you to turn on and control some of the outputs of the sound system. Also look for physical controls on the computer. Newer version of the sound system honor these as well as the software controls. Another missing bit of info is which version of oS is he running? Remember that Pulseaudio was a PITA when it was first introduced :-) .
