Hi guys,
I've been using SUSE for a number of years now, and I'm really happy
with it, but recently I bought myself an HP nx6125 notebook, and SUSE
10.0 has a number of issues that I haven't been able and/or haven't
had the time to resolve. So now I'm running Gentoo - easiest to get
the latest of all packages, but I don't really like it that much.
Is anybody using this notebook with any of the (Open)SUSE 10.0 release
candidates? If so, what are your experiences?
My issues, broadly, are:
1. PCMCIA only works with a card if the card was plugged in *before*
booting SUSE. If I plug something in after the OS has loaded, it
simply doesn't recognise it. The PCMCIA controller is a stock
standard Texas Instruments that uses the yenta_socket module. If I
unplug the card, and try to unload the relevant modules to load them
again, I always get a

I have a nx6125 running SuSE 10.0 Prof at the moment (Started with 9.3) I have had very good experience with it under SuSE 10.0, the only major problems I have had under SuSE 10 is that suspend does not work (known BIOS issue) and the modem does not work (Stupid ATI modem). I believe both issues can be solved by spending a bit of time on it, but I never bothered.

1. PCMCIA only works with a card if the card was plugged in *before* booting SUSE.
I don't think I have used the PCMIA before, so I cannot comment here.
2. Wireless: When I copy large amounts of data over wireless network, either with the onboard controller (broadcom, ndiswrapper) or a PCMCIA Netgear WG511T (atheros, madwifi), I will get a console message popping up in KDE saying something like "this computer will now shut down" - almost like someone did a shutdown -h now in the background.
I did have this problem, but it happened not only when copying large amounts of data. If you have a look at your log files you shoudl see that the powersaved system (IIRC) triggers the shutdown because it thinks the system is overheating. The default trip levels used are incorrect. You need to tell it to use thermal trip levels from your profiles. In /etc/sysconfig/powersave/thermal, set ENABLE_THERMAL_MANAGEMENT="kernel" That solved it for me. I am copying whole iso images over the onboard wireless Lan without any problems.
3. Wired (broadcom gigabit, tg3) network doesn't work at all.
I have had no problems. Works perfectly on my machine.
4. Sound: It works lovely in general, very sweet sounding card, but it seems like sound mixing is tempramental. I don't know if the card
I have had no sound problems. Playing music and DVD's without any problems. Sound system even handles multiple sound streams simultaneously, if the two applications usiing the sound system allow it. Some applications seems to lock the sound system and do not allow other apps to use the sound system while it is using it. I think Rhythmbox is like that. So your problem might be due to applications/soundsystem used and not hardware. (known BIOS issue) and the modem does not work (Stupid ATI modem). SUSE 10.0 picks mine up, but I haven't tried to use it. I haven't had much luck with it under Gentoo (honestly didn't have a lot of time to try), so I bought a Duxbury PCMCIA card - normal hardware modem on a genuine serial port - great!

I have had no problems. Works perfectly on my machine. It works, but it seems very tempramental. Today I was at a client who's running a DHCP server on SLES9, and my notebook wouldn't pick up an address. At home I have a netgear WGT624, and it picks up DHCP quite easily, but then again at work (IP-COP box) it doesn't. If I give it a static IP it works quite well though.

Mine works too, it's just from time to time something seems to lock the device, and skype's incoming sound just won't work reliably.

So your problem might be due to applications/soundsystem used and not hardware. That's what it looks like, but why? It didn't happen on my old Compaq, it doesn't happen on my desktop. So it must be a driver issue of sorts.
Thanks for your response Hans

Same model (PY416EA) Mine has a #ABB after the number. Not sure if it makes a difference.

I have only one place where I have problems with getting a DHCP address, but I never thought that it could be my network card, as it works everywhere else. I cannot remember if I had the same problem with my old laptop there.
it. Mine works too, it's just from time to time something seems to lock the device, and skype's incoming sound just won't work reliably.
I don't have problems with locking of the sound device, and I have only tried Skype voice once and I could not hear the other person. Sound breaks up. I blamed my network, but it might be the sound system. I'll give it a go on my workstation. You might have something here.. I was never too keen on all the ATI stuff in the mobo, but it was the only laptop with the capabilities close to what I wanted available in SA, so I did not have much of a choice. But, for my needs it is fine. I don't use Skype much for voice as I am generally on networks that is much too congested to allow that. I just think the sound system needs some extra TLC. The sound works good both ways, but after a short while (sometimes 5 seconds, some times a minute, on rare occasions 10 minutes) it starts breaking up on my side. I've ruled out bandwidth - it *always* works right on my desktop.
I was never too keen on all the ATI stuff in the mobo, but it was the only laptop with the capabilities close to what I wanted available in SA, so I did not have much of a choice. Same - this was the only one I could find with both an AMD CPU and more than 1024x768 resolution with semi decent graphics, except for the expensive Acer Ferrari. The other one I was considering was the Dell Inspiron 6000 (Pentium-M) - it was pretty good value for money at the time, in it's basic form, although the "upgrades" (DVDRW instead of DVD-ROM/CD-RW combo, Radeon gfx with dedicated memory instead of onboard Intel, etc.) was quite expensive, and for the same spec level it ended up being quite a bit more expensive than the HP, although I had good linux report on it, and not on the HP, and in general I'm not too impressed with HP notebooks (I'm still not). But what sold me on the HP was that I could pick it up the same day, while the Dell was build on order, 14 working days waiting time, and this was before the holidays.
But, for my needs it is fine. I don't use Skype much for voice as I am generally on networks that is much too congested to allow that. (due to our "wonderful" telecomms infrastructure here in SA....) Yeah, well, have you ever tried holding a conversation overseas on CellC?
