If you sweep all arguments on one pile it more or less boils down to : A. SuSE is less "technical" than RedHat. B. RedHat usually uses the latest (beta-) versions of applications: more features and more bugs C. SuSE offers 7 CD's of software while RedHat only uses 2 If you want a personal opinion on which one is better, try posting a "Hello SuSE suckas!" message to this list :-) Cheers, -- ---------------------------------------------------- Koos Pol T: +31 20 3116122 Systems Administrator F: +31 20 3116200 Compuware Europe B.V. SuSE's desktop is very stable and their applications work very well. Also SuSE has a a very well organized support data base. This is really important because it allows you to solve the problem right away. SuSE pays attention to detail.

Hmm there i cannot agree... suse's stickers ( at least in the spanish version) are kinda kiddie-like... dunno, i bought redhat 6.1 and got some really cool stickers ( including two little ones one very nice for the computer, cool in spain where most boxes are unbranded ) - of course now i am using suse 70 so i guess theres no need for more comments about technical matters :) Of course I know this is personal opinions, but I think that precisely one of SuSE's worst things ( happily not the most important ) is the image... Other brands have a much nicer, serious, professional, modern, call-it-as-you-like way to present their products. I AM NOT TALKING ABOUT QUALITY... I am talking about aesthethics. Those stickers look like drawn by a 3 year old. Just to finish, the redhat sticker was a reaaly nice one I put in my car. Unhappily, suse's will never make it there :)

I agree. Have you had a look at Mandrake's silliness? I can only assume it is to win over Windows users. If it looks like child's play then they might try Linux. Hve not seen the redhat ones , they do have a cool logo (the red hat) though. I Like them as they cover that nasty M$ logo on the pc that reminds me of the M$ tax. My home built do not need them. At 10:43 PM 2/19/2001 +0100, O'Bieito wrote:

Greetings! I'm having trouble on locating information for setting up a serial connection between two computers to log into a console. I normally telnet (ssh) into my SuSE 6.3 file server from my Windows 98 machine. Sometimes the network and/or access to that machine drops out for various reasons I'm still trying to track down. However, the local console is still active. Since I'm such a lazy bastard, I would like to run a serial cable from my Windows machine to log in rather than opening up the computer closet to access the local console. Any pointers on how to do this and/or web links would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Christopher
Check /etc/inittab aroujnd about line 67 is this: #S0:123:respawn:/sbin/agetty -L 9600 ttyS0 Try uncommenting that on both computers, then put the cable between each machines serial port 1. You can increase the speed if the cable can handle that. Hope that helps, Matt On Tue, 20 Feb 2001, Christopher D. Reimer wrote:

Hi Joost, I have some Terminal running on the combogombo (Nova Termn, CCGMS oder handyterm). You do only need that term for transfers. in case you need no file xfers, a simple handshake basic program would fit (for 1200 baud). better tho is machine language, which will serve you stable 2400 bauds full duplex send and receive. then, a 0-modem-cable with crossed pairs for sx/rx data does the job. have mgetty run to look for the port (/dev/ttyS03 is mine...) -- *º¤., ¸¸,.¤º*¨¨¨*¤Oliver@home*º¤., ¸¸,.¤º*¨¨*¤

If you can jury-rigged a RS-232 serial cable and have terminal emulation software, any device can be used to access the linux console on the serial port. The problem with the Commodore 64 is the 40x24 display. Although there are some software tricks from yesteryear that would make a C64 display 80x48 in black and white. ;) Christopher Reimer

Your compiler won't be broken....:-) Also, better ssecurity (although large still depends upon user of course), better graphic support. One config file that takes care of the system (/etc/rc.config). You will have Yast which is far more stable than Linuxconf. Sax 2 for graphical setup. There are more that others will mention, thos just came to mind :-). Your compiler won't be broken....:-)
Also, better ssecurity (although large still depends upon user of course), better graphic support. One config file that takes care of the system (/etc/rc.config).
You will have Yast which is far more stable than Linuxconf. Sax 2 for graphical setup.
Well, since 7.0, yast2 ist pure dumbf**k, since who needs this graphical nonsense? Sound support sucks under Suse (Notebook-Alsa problems all the time) Not true? O

I actually like the potential of Yast2. Its pretty unfair to give such a label to a new piece of software that tries to make life a little easier :-). I do not have the time to go digging through a thousand different text files. Sure nice to *know* that you can, but why should I be forced to? You may not have had much luck with sound support, but have you even tried RH? Nothing is perfect, I have a friend who was trying to get sound working on Win98SE and he used all the different drivers for this Crystal sound device to no avail. What is your sound device on your notebook? Did you try newer versions of ALSA? Oh yeah, if you have flu, make sure you get plenty of liquids and rest :-). Been a lot going around this year! Matt

No circular dependencies in the RPMs. I used to use Red Hat. Now I won't even touch it. SuSE is much better engineered, and has higher quality. Also SuSE does not do stupid things with its distribution like including beta versions of system libraries and compilers. Victor Cardona

I agree completely, I use RH at work and almost hate it, it's so messed up. SuSE just simply works. At home I only use SuSE
