Regardless which openSUSE version you run, the udev/HAL/hal-resmgr stuff has never worked really reliably. If you run openSUSE 11.1 the current bug report is https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=450351 but it was the same in certain cases all the time in the past since we use the udev/HAL/hal-resmgr stuff. In particular note https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=438867#c3 and https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=438867#c5 At some time it has also worked for openSUSE 11.1 but now it seems to fail again - just the usual unstable udev/HAL/hal-resmgr stuff all the time since it exists... As workaround access it via the saned (which runs as root) if your worksation is in a trusted internal network and when a firewall protects it from external access. In the YaST scanner module choose 'scanning via network' and select the 'local host configuration'. Usually this workaround is the only feasible solution for non-experts to get access permissions for normal users if there is an issue in the udev/HAL/hal-resmgr magic. same thing, execept that I configured the scanner years ago, and on nov 11 it worked, and I have changed nothing. Could be an update to something in the stack? I know I haven't changed anything myself in the configuration related to scanning... nimrodel:~ # /usr/lib/YaST2/bin/test_and_set_scanner_access_permissions The following models are currently not known to HAL: USB-ID(hex)=04b8:0110 To access the scanner as normal user, udev, HAL, and hal-resmgr are needed to grant appropriate access permissions automatically. Therefore the scanner model must be known to HAL. If the scanner is not known to HAL, a re-plug of a USB scanner should help. Otherwise a reboot should be done to restart the whole udev/HAL/hal-resmgr machinery. Check if the scanner is listed in the 'lshal' output. If a SCSI scanner which was switched on during boot is not listed in the 'lshal' output, the usual reason is that the kernel module for the scanner's SCSI host adapter does not notify HAL about the scanner device. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=450900#c5 is just one more example that the udev/HAL/hal-resmgr machinery does not work reliably and therefore I recommend that you stop the hopeless fight with this mess and use for example the workaround it via the saned, see http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse/2008-12/msg00131.html If your worksation is not in a trusted internal network where a firewall protects it from external access (if I remember correctly, you use a router box to connect to the Internet but you don't trust the built-in firewall in this router box), don't run saned (see "man saned"), instead add the normal user who should access the scanner to the group "lp". I know that trick, but you see, the scanner has been working for months. It is only now and then that it stops working. It might stay working for another year before it fails again...
If your worksation is not in a trusted internal network where a firewall protects it from external access (if I remember correctly, you use a router box to connect to the Internet but you don't trust the built-in firewall in this router box),
I don't trust it too much, right, because it is not updatable. If it has a hole, I will not know nor be able to close it. It is a box provided by the ISP.
don't run saned (see "man saned"), instead add the normal user who should access the scanner to the group "lp".
