Can anybody tell me why simply upgrading Postfix via YOU would end up creating a new main.cf file that is mostly correct but deleted a few configuration lines that broke my mailman virtual domained lists? Seems like YOU should leave the existing main.cf pretty much alone and not delete stuff.

This is in no way going to help you...but you helped me. I was going to do that in another couple minutes, but now I'm all scared. You're right though. I'm always nervous using YOU, which is why I switched to apt (synaptic). I rarely have a problem. Good luck! P.S. I've generally taken to using RCS for my modified config files. Then if YOU or some other program overwrites a file, I can easily recover it. - herman On Mon, 15 Sep 2003, Tom Nielsen wrote: ->On Mon, 2003-09-15 at 23:00, Jim Norton wrote: -> ->> Can anybody tell me why simply upgrading Postfix via YOU would end up creating a new main.cf file that ->> is mostly correct but deleted a few configuration lines that broke my mailman virtual domained lists? ->> ->> Seems like YOU should leave the existing main.cf pretty much alone and not delete stuff. -> -> ->This is in no way going to help you...but you helped me. Hi Tom, Well it's just annoying. I have a backup file of main.cf that I was able to compare against what YOU ended up creating. So it wasn't a big deal to fix the problem. However, I had about 6 mail lists ( via mailman ) that went broken for nearly a full 12 hours. YOU ( or Postfix ) or added a relay_host line in main.cf for me. For god sake, if I wanted one *I* would have put one in. I am a bit of a night owl, plus it's only 11:18PM on the West Coast in the U.S. :-) -Jim-

I guess it's easier for me to remember who you are by the domain name. I'm down in Ventura, CA. Just south of Santa Barbara. Do you use spamassassin by chance? Tom

I think you're blaming the wrong program. YOU would cause SuSEconfig to be run when it is done, and it may have rewritten your main.cf from the stuff in /etc/sysconfig/postfix. Normally it *will* leave anything you've changed alone and will tell you that it is making up a main.cf.SuSEconf version of the file.

AFAR, updating postfix in SuSE 8.2 broke main.cf for me too, mail was not getting delivered. I did submit that to SuSE feedback, at the time. I don't think that it's YOU's fault, but rather an error in the --upgrade scripts in the rpm. That will affect main.cf no matter what tool is used to download and install the patch. Just make a backup of main.cf, update postfix with YOU, compare, and give feedback to SuSE.
