Couple of obervations: 1) The company name is spelled "Novell". 2) "Novell" is a company. It makes a number of products, among them "NetWare" (a NOS) and SUSE Linux. You are considering substituting SAMBA for NetWare, not "Novel". 3) The next released of NetWare, dubbed "Open Enterprise Server" (OES), will offer you the OPTION of installing NetWare's services atop EITHER the "traditional" NetWare kernel OR a SUSE Linux kernel. This is due out in the next 3 months or so. 4) If you're running a modern version of NetWare (v5.1 or later), you ALREADY have the option of using a SAMBA-like environment. Its called Native File Access Protocols (NFAP). This allows a NetWare server to appear as a Windoze CIFS server, and can be thought of as "SAMBA for NetWare"). See http://www.novell.com/products/nfa So.... unless you're still running a version of NetWare from LAST century, you already have the capability to implement what you're looking at, without any additional cost or investment - you simply turn the functionality on. As for migrating wholesale, why not wait for OES to be released, and see what that offers, before you make a decision. At least you'll be making a decision with all the info.
"Chris Roubekas" <croubekas@panafonet.gr> 11/1/2004 6:15:49 AM >>> Dear friends,
I am thinking about substituting Samba for Novel. Do you know of any good document and/or manual that perhaps I could read prior to making such a change (website perhaps) ? I thought of making this change since I am facing some problems with mapped drives from Windows to Samba and I would like to examine the Novel case as a possibility (hopefully better one). In addition if there is anyone that has a Novel Server (emulation) running already with SuSE9.1 or prior, I would be very interested in hearing your impressions and thoughts. Do you consider Novel to be a better solution than Samba? Kind Regards, Chris
