But what is really bugging me is that I cannot get the Lexmark (IBM) Laserprinter 4039p to print using any application EXCEPT Firefox where it WILL print an html page! It will also print test pages in YaST or in the Printing/CUPS option in Utilities but it will NOT print in Kwrite, OpenOffice, KGhostview.
It DID work in all the apps when I was using 10.2 - except that in OpenOffice I had to resort to using the "fix" of first converting the file to pdf (ie using the PDF Converter trick) - but come 10.3 it is stuffed-- even the PDF converter doesn't work! I am rather loath to use the 8450 for standard printing because of the cost of the ink cartridges so I am just a bit pissed off that the laserprinter doesn't print.
The BUG mentioned earlier (above) re the parameter being set to YES doesn't have anything to do with the Lexmark not printing - there is something else basically wrong with the setup/config files for CUPs in 10.3.
I've had that suspicion for awhile, but wasn't sure. After bad experiences in the past with Lexmark, they've been on my "not to buy list" which I see to it is disbursed to all clients, and others. The same for Canon and some others. The only 2 companies I'll deal with are HP and Epson. Printing is a "mess," at times with Linux. Either CUPS screws up or the drivers aren't good.....sometimes even with HP and Epson. Then, there's the problem of not having 64-bit drivers as THERE SHOULD BE for printers AND scanners. The only partially functioning Iscan driver for Epson is a good example. We're not ready for prime time yet. Fred -- A: Because it messes up the order in which people normally read text.
