hehehe...I do *exactly* the same thing. Or, I did, until I abandoned gogo...
Anyway, I appreciate the advice or any possible configuration options I might have missed. I believe I have SMP and Multi-threading turned on in these programs, and I know I have smp compiled into the kernel (and working).
That sounds perfectly reasonable. Two things: How many instances of gogo does abcde start? You should not start more than two (one per CPU). How fast and what type of CD-ROM do you have? Even with my FPU-challenged K6-III, gogo can often outrun my Kenwood 52x ATAPI CD. Don't say that Jon, that's when I got my Ultraplex wide. Oh well, another bubble burst.
You'd better put that darning needle away. The Ultraplex Wide has a 10ms faster average seek rate, and the SCSI interface *theoretically* allows higher burst rates than a standard ATAPI connection can allow. The flip side is that your Ultraplex spins down dramatically, whereas my TrueX does not. According to the Plextor web site, your CD has a low-end transfer rate of 17x. My Kenwood (52x) never drops below 48x (6.8mb/sec). I'll also venture that your SCSI unit makes more noise (8900 RPM) than my lowly ATAPI equipment (never gets over 6000), and with only a 512k cache, your CD-ROM works harder to repetitively access large chunks of data (I've got 2mb). I didn't even mention the fact that my CD-ROM reads data with three simultaneous beams and tracks with four more. How many beams does your CD-ROM use? Unfortunately, I don't have the $130+ to spend on an Ultraplex, and I don't have CD-Tach installed, so I can't argue with hard benchmarks (that's an oxymoron anyway). The Ultraplex Wide has one singular advantage: the SCSI UltraWide bus. Otherwise, the consensus in the hardware field is that it is a technologically mediochre product. # umount /dev/flamethrower -- -=|JP|=- Jon Pennington | Atipa Linux Solutions -o) jpennington@atipa.com | Kansas City, MO /\\ 816-241-2641 x107 | http://www.atipa.com _\_V -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
not to mention Kenwoods world renown reliability and how good their service is. Don't forget that the people who spend the extra cash to get a Kenwood (and there is a significant amount of cash at stake) are the same type of people who are the most likely to complain. The failure rate that I've seen does not indicate any higher risk of failure than any other manufacturer. If you release a product that is designed to be superior and advertise it as a superior product, the client that purchase your product is probably going to be superior pain. -=|JP|=- Jon Pennington | Atipa Linux Solutions -o) jpennington@atipa.com | http://www.atipa.com /\\ Kansas City, MO, USA | 816-241-2641 x110 _\_V On Wed, 23 Feb 2000, Rocky McGaugh wrote:

OK since my last query concerning this got nowhere, I'll try again. My overall goal is to get my usb tape drive working. What steps should I take, however in getting usb support in general up? Could someone clue me in here, or point me to relavent docs? My machine has USB on the motherboard and usb ports coming out of the back so I'd assume that I'm not too far off base here. So someone whose gotten usb in general to work (usb scsi even better) could you please drop me a note? -mab -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
What version of SuSE? Are you using a stock kernel or have you downloaded a new version? If you are using 6.3 and have not installed a newer kernel, get the usb update on the suse www page, install it and then enable usb in rc.config. I'm running 6.3 with a few things cut off and updated reiserfs installed. I configured for usb support and enabled in /etc/rc.config. I had run into errs which I will recreate if I need to. I was hoping to go from the module install level up troubleshooting, however. Anyway as per your instructions I got the rpm and this happened:
heretic:/tmp # rpm -iv usb.rpm file /sbin/init.d/usb from install of usb-0.5-16 conflicts with file from package usb-0.5-1 heretic:/tmp #
What's up? Thx for your help- -mab

You could force the rpm to install, but I prefer to have it in the kernel. I have modified my installation so I'm not quite sure how the stock one was if there is no options for usb in "make menuconfig" then look for a file called config.in located in /usr/src/linux/arch/i386 there you will find a line reference usb that is commented out with a "#", remove the number sign and the usb stuff will show up in the kernel config menu. Now recompile and install the new kernel, you should see some messages reference usb while linux is booting, if it goes by too quick use the command "dmesg | less" to view it. OK- after long delays I've (sorta) got it. The tape drive is recognized as a scsi device, but not labled a tape device:
usbscsi: Command wakeup usbscsi: pop_CB_reset usbscsi: pop_CB_reset: clearing endpoint halt usbscsi: pop_CB_reset done usbscsi: Command wakeup scsi: unknown type 31 Vendor: LϜ Model: Rev: Type: Unknown ANSI SCSI revision: 02 Detected scsi generic sge at scsi1, channel 0, id 0, lun 2
and then the markedly similar but a little different:
usbscsi: pop_CB_reset usbscsi: pop_CB_reset: clearing endpoint halt usbscsi: pop_CB_reset done usbscsi: Command wakeup scsi: unknown type 31 Vendor: LϜ Model: Rev: Type: Unknown ANSI SCSI revision: 02 Detected scsi generic sgf at scsi1, channel 0, id 0, lun 3
In fact the device is repeated through sgn... So how do I force it to be a tape drive? -mab
