[opensuse] Novell Client for openSUSE Linux. Again...
In my continual search for a way to best integrate openSUSE with the Novell environment here at work, I have tried to install the currently available Novell Client for Linux (novell-client-2.0-suse10.2-i386.iso) on openSUSE11.1. Granted this is for openSUSE 10.2, but I had to try. Of course, it does not work. Seems it (more specifically, novell-xtire-base) is looking for libbfd-2.17.50.0.5.so, which is surely a part of 10.2 (from the binutils package). I will try to dig this up to satisfy the requirement, but I can guess where this is heading... I know I keep asking, but anyone hear the official position of Novell on this point? Last time through I got many opinions from the list, mainly saying to use SUSE Linux instead. Point taken. Action not taken. Search for solution continues... -- Roger Oberholtzer OPQ Systems / Ramböll RST Ramböll Sverige AB Krukmakargatan 21 P.O. roger, just this morning I also installed Novell Client for Linux 2.0SP1 beta. BUT: I downloaded the version for openSUSE 11.1 and SLE11 So far it works not as bad as other versions ;) Give that one a try! just this morning I also installed Novell Client for Linux 2.0SP1 beta. BUT: I downloaded the version for openSUSE 11.1 and SLE11
Just additional info to let you know how I installed it here and how it works (openSUSE Factory, but there is not much changed to 11.1 yet.. that's why it works). - download the ISO from the novell beta site (I use x86_64) - unpacked the content to /mnt/NCL - added it as a repo to zypper (zypper ar /mnt/NCL NCL) - installed it (zypper in -t pattern novell-ncl) Logout / login (some path variables are messed otherwise, as it's installed in /opt) and then you can start using it. I tried it in a similar way (added the ISO as a repository in Yast), and I get this: #### YaST2 conflicts list - generated 2009-01-21 13:17:49 #### nothing provides libbfd-2.16.91.0.5.so needed by novell-xtier-base-3.1.6-0.8.i586 [ ] do not install pattern:novell-ncl-1.0.0-5.i586 #### YaST2 conflicts list END ### With your zypper command, I get basically the same: Problem: nothing provides libbfd-2.16.91.0.5.so needed by novell-xtier-base-3.1.6-0.8.i586 Solution 1: do not ask to install a solvable providing pattern:novell-ncl The system is an up-to-date (not factory) openSUSE11.1. I only have /usr/lib/libbfd-2.19.so from the binutils package. Perhaps you have more installed? And you downloaded the version for 11.1 / SLE11, right? (Novell_Client_SLE11-x86_64-20081218-CD1.iso) Dominique -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

On my disk I have pattern novell-ncl-1.0.0-9.x86_64 so you probably can't have the right version there; I assume i586 and x86_64 are somewhat in sync here. Dominique -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Mine is novell-client-2.0-SP1-sle10sp2-i386.iso, which is the latest I see at the Novell download site. Where are you getting this software from? I am getting mine from http://download.novell.com/index.jsp, selecting "Novell Client" and getting the latest version I see there. I have a Novell login. Maybe it does not let me see more files? Or you are some place different. -- Roger Oberholtzer OPQ Systems / Ramböll RST Ramböll Sverige AB Krukmakargatan 21 P.O. Ahhh, there we have it ;) You can find a later version in the beta download sections (menu left) http://www.novell.com/beta/auth/beta.jsp?id=2585&type=1 There are some more ISO files available, one for example for 11.1. It has installed. I have logged out/in. Now I need to sort out the settings, like the tree and all. I used to have that somewhere... Thanks for the help. I think I have what I need to get started. Now to pick the brains of the guys in the local IT to get my settings sorted out... I wonder if this bets means that Novell intend to make the Client available for openSUSE on a regular basis. -- Roger Oberholtzer OPQ Systems / Ramböll RST Ramböll Sverige AB Krukmakargatan 21 P.O. It would be REALLY appreciated (also by me.. I kicked my Win down off my office notebook long ago... even though my boss did not like it at first). The next step would be to get it in a repository ;) but let's not ask for everything at the first day... I think we can be happy something worked out finally at all.
