[opensuse] Opensuse 13.2 KDE 4 Question about a problem with PAM or permissions?
I have a user that has following setup: System settings are secure. User A all works as expected. You plugin a USB card / key and it asks for the root password. User B was for a long time full normal. Worked as A. Suddenly it refuses to open USB keys. It asks for the password but the user cannot see the input window for the rootpassword. What could be the reason. Yes I know I have to change the machine, but is is under the usual responsibility of that user, which is in Italy and I am in Brussels now. So I would like to have some clue where to search when I am going to do this over the phone. For me it is a kind of "focus stealing" but I am far from certain. It is not as simple as that. If I plug in a FAT/NTFS USB stick I can simply click on it and its open, no password asked. If I plug two USBs that contain openSUSE install media, or live media, nothing happens. I tried an USB stick with EXT-4, and no password is requested. I think that it was required in the past. However, mounting internal hard disks seems to require the root password.

I actually did the following that solved it. I did make the user run: chown users:group -R Did not help. I uninstalled the user, then installed it. Asked whether he should take ownership. Yes: did not change. I uninstalled all PAM related files and especially forced the uninstall of 32bit related compatibility files. Then I did just instal the pam packages. Which pulled in quite some dependencies. And then it worked. I think all this was given by a mismatch of files from a formerly offered software that now (due to the EOL) is not there anymore. And caused a hybrid installation. Or, some dependencies where missing.
