So what you will find in moving the files back is that nothing will be as it was before. I guess I do not understand why it is going to take you a week to upgrade the server. I would suggest these steps:
1. Have all the new disks purchased and ready to go. 2. Backup all data, tape would be best, you should be doing this already. 3. Update the bios 4. Install the new disks 5. Restore the data
Your done and should not have taken more then 24 hours.
Another way is to have a second file server you can move all the data to.

Well for now the windows server is up an running, it has antivirus software on it ( servers the windows workstations for that) an is running the access control into the building also ( windows only software ). I was really meaning a week at the most, I think it would have been less, But I have other duties an things that comes up during the week an I was allowing time for that an other things that come up in the weeks time. I'm also waiting on 10.2 to get here. For now I am going to copy over the data to another linux machine, which does not have the mirroring raid system I have on the current linux server. On the backup I am doing that already just not on tape. I'm backuping up to another harddrive into one big compressed file on another machine ( disk to disk). This is a much faster solution then tape backup at this time.

I have scraped the plan before I got your email message an am going to another linux machine. Like I said I have to have a windows server for the antivirus software an access control into the building ( it controls the locks an alarm system).

The problem you will find is that the files copied to the Windows server will loose all permissions and ownership. For example lets say you have a user sally and here primary group is marketing. She has files all over the file server. When you copy those files to Windows you loose sally and marketing. Now to make it even worse lets say she has files like: rwxrw-r-- sally mrketing myfile when you pull it back from windows you will loose sally and marketing and you will have the permissions: rwxrwxrwx. I strongly suggest you re think the idea of using a Windows server. Depending on the amount of data, when I was saying 24 hours I was calculating on about 600GB of data. If you only have lets say 50GB of data you can do this in a single day. Remember while the data is restoring you can be doing other things. You need to plan for this down time or you will find yourself spending more time in trying to correct the problem that was caused by Windows. Thanks mike for the info. Like I said I am not continuing with the windows server for the project of redoing the main linux server, I am moving the data to another linux machine an using that while I'm rebuilding the main linux server, this second linux machine has raid on it just not the mirroring raid that is on my main server. My boss had suggested / told me to use the windows server for the backup server til the main one was back up an running. In the process of coping over stuff to it I ran into the problem an have now decided to do what you were suggesting, had started on that before I read your email the first time. My boss is not one to play with or use linux , If something was to happen to me I'm not sure how long he would stay with linux on the main server but for now we are using it since I can work with linux. The windows server is up and running an serving up my antivirus software for workstations and also running my access control system for the building ( it has to be windows for this for now ). I have the new hard drives here but am waiting on suse 10.2 to get here from novell ( should be here Monday). Then I will rebuild the linux server. Come Monday after noon when I get the suse 10.2 box set I will start on the rebuilding of the main linux server. I have to do the coping of data after hours so not to have down time for the office, getting over time now for the project also, can't beat that.
