Dear All, I got problem to install OpenSuSE 11.2 into new PC such as DELL OptiFlex or ACER Veriton (using Intel ICH8 SATA or newer ?). It caused OpenSuSE 11.2 has no driver for such Intel SATA Interface. With OpenSuSE 12.4 installation was very smoothly done. But I have application that not developed yet to run under 12.4 version. Need advise about latest driver for Intel SATA that I want to install with OpenSuSe 11.2. Thank you so much for you help. ICH8 is not exactly new, I'm sure openSUSE 11.2 has drivers for it.

12.2 you mean?

With OpenSuSE 12.4 installation was very smoothly done. But I have application that not developed yet to run under 12.4 version.
12.2 you mean? <AW> Yes 12.2. Sorry for incorrect version stated
Need advise about latest driver for Intel SATA that I want to install with OpenSuSe 11.2.
Can you describe in more detail the problem you're experiencing? Error messages etc. <AW> Installer just informed that no DVD Drive, as it has no (built in) driver for SATA in the 11.2 DVD media. If I tried to use USB DVD Drive, installer stopped when accessing HDD with exactly same situation (no built in driver). I am sure if I have driver for SATA and put it into the installation progress, problem will solved. Thanks and Regards. Hi Wong I don't think I've ever seen that. Sometime I have seen messages about "unable to access/partition /dev/sdX" (when starting the partitioner), but those are usually not related to a missing driver. Wrt adding a driver during the installation process, we used to have support for that, but I've not had reason to do that for years. At which point during installation do you get this message, and what is the exact message? -- Per Jessen, Zürich (10.8°C) http://www.dns24.ch/ - free DNS hosting, made in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Why is 11.2 released in 2009 wanted or needed now? 11.2 release date was 15 months prior to H61 release[1]. To expect a chipset to work it should have a release date 4-8 months prior to the release date of an openSUSE release to be installed. Whatever the problem with H61 is or was, it should have nothing to do with ICH8. ICH8, ICH9 & ICH10 all were released before 11.2. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I/O_Controller_Hub Many motherboards come with more than 4 SATA ports. Of those, probably most have one or more SATA ports (often in conjunction with PATA ports since Intel chipsets stopped including PATA ports as of ICH8) on a non-ICH controller chip from JMicron or Marvell or other. Possibly your DVD was connected to a non-ICH controller chip that does not have support in 11.2. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Yep, that's not a bad guess - Wong, depending on your experience level, trying to debug this and figure out what to do could well take longer than moving your application to 12.2. /Per -- Per Jessen, Zürich (5.1°C) http://www.dns24.ch/ - free DNS hosting, made in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

If it is important to you to run 11.2 on your H61, and the only problem is getting installed via DVD, then you can use options to install that do not involve DVD, instead of using an add-in SATA card. Many of add-in cards only support booting from HD and not OM devices like DVD reader. Maybe your H61 can boot 11.2 CD made from netboot .iso file instead of DVD, or from 11.2 LiveCD? http://ftp5.gwdg.de/pub/opensuse/discontinued/distribution/11.2/iso/ PXE boot is one option others use that I have not tried. My favorite method to install whether HD is empty or not, is to first partition via live media, then mkfs an EXT2 /boot partition, and install only Grub and the linux kernel and initrd from the installation media. I then boot using the new Grub to load the installation linux kernel and initrd and install via HTTP (which can be done from ftp5.gwdg.de even for 11.2). This same technique can be used to install from the .iso of 11.2 instead of HTTP by putting the .iso on a previously formatted data (non-/, non-/home) partition. I rarely install any Linux distro directly from DVD media boot. Another option would be to remove the HD from the H61 system and put in a different Intel system that has 11.2 DVD support, install there, then move the HD back to the H61 system. Did you check to make sure lack of DVD support with H61 is not an incompatible BIOS setting? Maybe a cmdline option to offset a quirk would enable the DVD to be used, or maybe failsafe boot mode? Are you sure the DVD reader in the H61 system is not faulty? Will it boot 12.2 DVD or Knoppix DVD or CD. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Do not do that. The above and your previous posts seem to indicate that the failure is more likely a quirk of the particular motherboard, its BIOS, and/or the H61 implementation on that motherboard.
Should I edit the menu.lst?
Without knowledge of the exact error messages and context at the failure point, or seeing device.map, fstab or menu.lst, it's impossible to speculate on whether such a simple change could help.
<AW> The question is; if 11.2 support H77 (and Z68), does the built in driver for ICH already support to H61? If not, where can I get the driver of H61?
Your reference to ICH8 appears to imply compatibility with ICH8 seems to be a component of the H61. Certainly ICH8 itself is much older than 11.2. I know I installed 11.2 on at least two ICH8 systems, and am running 11.4 to type this on an ICH8-equipped motherboard that had previously used 11.0 and then 11.2, and can still boot them both. If H61 is a problem generally, then Google should be able to find you discussion on the subject, probably on one of the kernel mailing lists if nothing else. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive."
