I get these repeated warnings in the log of my home server:

But the thing is, smartctl can read that disk just fine:

It did read the temperature change, but it claims the other errors, which are false.

First, add a newline at the end of the file ;)
Well, SMART-over-USB has quirks. Try '-d sat' in addition to '-d removable'. And BTW: '-S on' should only needed once (if ever). So try this instead of above two:
/dev/[..] -d removable -d sat -a -s (S/../.././02|L/../../6/03)

There is one. I usually take care to add one, I was caught by it once or twice ;-)

/dev/[..] -d removable -d sat -a -s (S/../.././02|L/../../6/03)
I forgot trying -d sat.
Ok, will see in an hour or two if it works.
With that error, I had to disable the mail on error, because it emailed constantly.

Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, and it sends emails. 18 emails per day

Hm. Try: '-d sat,auto -T permissive' (see 'man 5 smartd.conf')... Otherwise, I'd say that USB-SATA bridge is just b0rked.

Can't be borked, the disk works fine. I have two units, both do the same thing. Western Digital MyDisk.
After I removed the mail thing yesterday, I got only three warnings.
Now adding your idea, we'll see tomorrow :-)

It _could_ still be broken - using SMART ATA commands is not the same as just doing IO.

The disk works fine with smartctl, it is smartd which has problems.
I wonder if the issue might be your "-d sat" in the config - seen from the kernel, the disk is not a SATA drive, but a SCSI drive.

It is some problem with smartd, and I had it for years. Since I bought some disks it doesn't like. Then, one year the software gets an update and one disk that failed then works. It is a software problem in the daemon.
I'm testing now:
/dev/disk/by-id/usb-WD_My_Book_25EE_32544B5354325344-0:0 -s on -d removable -d sat,12 -T permissive -a -s (S/../.././02|L/../../6/03)

I tried "verypermissive", which is listed in the man page, but it complains:

As you can see, both disks fail. They can't be both "borked". Then sometimes it logs temperature change. The problem is smartd itself. smartctl copes fine.

With smartctl there is no problem, it is with smartd only.
So presumably a config issue.
Huh, no, doesn't like it:
<3.6> 2020-08-08T14:25:00.839082+02:00 Isengard smartd 32172 - - Device: /dev/disk/by-id/usb-WD_My_Book_25EE_32544B5354325344-0:0, type changed from 'sat,auto' to 'scsi'
So your change to sata was ignored, presumably because the USB driver presents the drive as SCSI.
The reverse.
The way I read the above "type changed from 'sat, auto' to 'scsi'" is that the type was changed from 'sat, auto' to 'scsi' ?
The disk works fine with smartctl, it is smartd which has problems.
I wonder if the issue might be your "-d sat" in the config - seen from the kernel, the disk is not a SATA drive, but a SCSI drive.
I have tried with and without. Same problem.
Hmm. Maybe its a problem to bring up on the smartmontools list?

Maybe, but what? That's what I hoped, but I'm out of ideas.

I did not change to sata, I changed to "sata, auto". It should have kept the sata part, not tried scssi, IMHO.

I tried, years ago. Dead silence.
