Re: [SLE] DSL PPPO and Bell Atlantic
Steve - Bell Atlantic's xDSL over PPPoE works with Linux. And it is so much faster than on my Macintosh. BA is, to be gentle, still working on their support issues. I don't know a whole lot about PPPoE (it's a new protocol that allows the telcos to monitor, and potentially bill, by time), but go to www.roaringpenguin.com/pppoe.html for more info. They have an application that will establish the PPPoE connection. Download the tarball, compile it, and run the app and you're connected. I had no problems at all installing on Suse 6.3. (There are kernel patches available as well if you would rather go that route.) BTW, you do need the external modem - if BA gave you the internal, you should be able to exchange it. I've got the Westell, it's not great, but it gets the job done. Let me know if you need more help - Steve --- "Steven T. Hatton" <hattons@CPKWEBSER5.ncr.disa.mil> wrote:
I'm trying to get set up for Bell Atlantic's DSL. They are telling me on the tech (no)support line that I have to use either NT workstation 4.0 (not server, mind you), some DOS based windows e.g. Windows98. Since I don't run any of these, I am in something of a fix. I do own a copy of NT workstation, but I would hate to install it just to make an internet connection.
Does anybody know if and how I could use Linux to make my DSL connection to Bell Atlantic? The people I spoke with really don't know how this works other than that I have to install BA's software. It uses something they call PPPO (PPP over ethernet) anybody know what this is?

Steve, Thanks! I'm actually trying to get Bell Atlantic's tech support folks to look at the Roaring Penguine. My service isn't turned on yet, so it's all future tense for me. One question I do have is regarding IP masqurading and routing. Can I bind two IP addresses to the same NIC and use it for both my internal traffic, and for my BA connection? If I want to set up an internal LAN with a gateway to BA must I have two NICs in my gateway machine? Steve Stephen nyc wrote:
