[SuSE Linux] netscape craches
Grrrr.... Darn netscape... It craches sa soon it sees a java applet. I know i can turn it off but... or rather it "freezes". Am I the only one ? When is 5 out? 5 will not be out. Netscape has been bought by AOL, and Netscape gave the source code to www.mozilla.org. Expect something from mozilla eventually. Go back to version 4.03. It seems quite solid for me. Maybe when SuSe 6 comes out the glibc version of Netscape 4.5 will work better. hope so. - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A>

After trying netscape in many flavors from 4.05 to 4.5 and many inbetween, I got to say that Im not terribly impressed. So I went back, back, back. Back to 3.04. Now 3.04 is stable and does not crash on java, mailto's, and does frames, etc. In fact, I used to suffer a crash on a mailto: daily and some urls would just crash the display leaving a large process running but no netscape. Now with 3.04, no crashes. I dont think the glibc version of netscape will be any different than the libc5 version. So Im content with 3.04. It works; and thats more than I can say for the 4 series of netscape products. -- Michael E. I'm using 4.5 on Slack with libc and I can't say as I have come across these same problems with mailto and sites with java, about the only time I have noticed it crashing is when I hit a particular site which uses push technology to open a second littler window and I hit back before its completely loaded. Other then that it runs great for me. -- Ec|ipse on EFnet - tomas@primenet.com - <A HREF="http://www.primenet.com/~tomas</A">http://www.primenet.com/~tomas</A> Ec|ipse@|Watcher| - botnet webpage down until further notice Slackware Linux v3.6+ - Kernels 2.0.35/2.2.1 - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A>
Hmmm. I've used just about every version of Netscape since 3.x, and never had any java problems. Did you make sure to set the MOZILLA_HOME whatchmacallit? I'm not in Linux right now, so I can't look the info up. Mark --- Michael Perry wrote:

Well I just downloaded the glibc version of 4.5 to test when SuSE 6.0 arrives. I've also noticed that the 2.2 kernel gives alot more messages on boot up about detecting and setting up my motherboard devices like PCI bridges. So I'm hoping that once the 2.2 kernel is perfected, alot of the "bus error" problems will dissappear. I think the reason their are so many different opinions on these "bus errors", is that it is motherboard related. Some work well, others don't.

Since we're on the subject of Netscape crashing... I was playing with Debian earlier in the month and used the glibc version of 4.5, with mixed success. I experienced the same problems with SuSE 5.3 (it supports glibc binaries, right?). The problem was my Message Filters kept failing. The message mentioned something about a "child" (there were a few more adjectives, but I can't recall them right now.). I also completely lost my mail a couple times (a real bummer). I switched back to the libc5 version and all is well. Until you are satisfied that Netscape 4.5 (glibc) is behaving, I'd leave my mail on the server and pop it off with fetchmail.
