I am discovering that I can't find an available stratum 2 time server, after trying all the closest ntp servers physically near (and some not close but open access). This has been happening for maybe 2 weeks or so. Has something changed, or is this related to all the worms/viruses running around wasting bandwidth? "ntpdate -b <time server>" used to work. I just looked through the update messages and noticed there may have been an xntp update a couple of weeks ago (message date is Aug 28). Could the update have broken ntp? I doubt this as I have Windows clients that can no longer sync as well. Strange... Any ideas? Is it working for anyone now? -- Joe Morris New Tribes Mission Email Address: Joe_Morris@ntm.org Web Address: http://www.mydestiny.net/~joe_morris Registered Linux user 231871 God said, I AM that I AM. I'm currently running xntp-4.1.1-261 with no problems at all. The NTP daemon points to two internal NTP servers I've got on my network which, at the same time, point to several stratum 2 NTP servers located in France, Germany, Spain and United States. Have you tried running "ntptrace localhost" or "ntpq pe" to gather additional information?

Are there stratum 2 servers in Spain (open type)? There are none listed - aside from slug, of course. http://www.eecis.udel.edu/%7emills/ntp/servers.html -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

AFAIK, you're right... Here, in Spain, slug.ctv.es is the only one.

I am running something called NISTIME 32 in Windows. It always complains that the "daytime server is not available" but nevertheless it keeps time. I don't know if there is a Linux version available. --doug

If you are not able to sync with any time server then you might consider checking with your ISP to verify they are not filtering port 123. A stratum 2 time server I know is operational: ntp1.linuxmedialabs.com open access in Colorado Springs, CO

A trick. Most BIG IPs keep their routers in sync with the time, guess so events can be tracked accurately - like RIAA violations. :-) I use the trick of using my router (netstat -rn) as the ntp server. I'm in Comcast in Montgomery County, Maryland USA and the time is highly accurate (well according to calling time). Most routers will serve as ntp stratum 2 servers. -- I am unique and special, just like everyone else.

I tried us.pool.ntp.org, but when I use named instead of numbered locations, they are not resolved. ie: getnetnum: "us.pool.ntp.org" invalid host number, line ignored -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org
