I have tried everyones suggestions - thank you: Even after trying all of them to start, restart, fix the bootloader ..... In YAST 2 ..... System .... Edit etc/sysconfig there is no sign of acpid, only apmd Similarly in the runlevel editor there is no sign of acpid, only apmd So I have reconfigured bootloader to acpi=off apm=on insserv and restart apmd ...... and I now have some power management :-)) I'll maybe wair for version 9.0 to try acpi again. But my battery seems bad .... not recognised ..... have to clean it up and retry this. Norman
