[opensuse] Help!! DVD's won't play in Linux
I've just bought a DVD Recorder/VCR with the idea of transferring my old VHS tapes to DVD. I've tried a couple and it has worked well and I now have the recorded on DVD. However, when I put them in to my computer to play them I find that they produce error messages along the lines of "source cannot be read" and stuff about not having sufficient rights. However, the same DVD's play without any problems under Windows XP, and I have not problems playing commercial video DVD's under Linux. I would be grateful if anyone knows of a way around this, as I use Linux 99% of the time. Secondly, does anyone know of my legal position (I'm in the UK) can I just take this equipment back? Thanks and just in case anyone is interested the equipment is a Philips DVDR3512V (a standalone DVD and VHS recorder) Eddie -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

This should help... http://software.opensuse.org/codecs ..also don't forget to write your local MP and tell them you want these items open sourced. :) -- kai www.filesite.org || www.4thedadz.com || www.perfectreign.com remember - a turn signal is a statement, not a request -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Thanks for the suggestions regarding the codecs but I think that I have all the codecs I could find installed. I'm now beginning to think that it is not a Linux vs Window thing. After experimenting further I found that one of my disc will play in Linux. I just need to work out the difference between the one that works and all the ones that don't.. I have just run kaffeine from the command line and got some error messages. What is the preferred way to post these? (Please note that I have no problem playing movie DVD's that I have purchased. Just problems with the ones that I have recorded using this device. I have finalised the discs and they do play in windows. I guess however that I must be doing something wrong since one of the discs actually does play) Thanks again for the all the help. Have you tried Videolan (VLC) ? It seems to work with anything I throw at it!

Try "xine --verbose" from an xterm, and just post the output, or the part of the output where the error shows.

It maybe simply that the burner is not liked by the reader. Try mounting those dvds and reading them (dd if=/dev/dvd of=testfile.iso). Maybe changing the dvd media to another brand could help. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. I (sort of) know the problem now. The recorder gives the option to edit the recording before finalising the disc. If I edit the recording then nothing in Linux (that I've tried so far) will read it. I get the menu but when I select a title I just get error messages stating that the source can't be read. If I record something and do not edit anything except rename the disc and title then normally it will play in Linux. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Then I think you need to talk with the chaps that makes the linux software and really know how the insides work. At least, an specialized forum or mail list. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. Installing all the Gstreamer/Xine plugins and al the codecs in
repositories generally seems to do the trick for playing DVD's and
most other common media formats.
