Hi my problem was caused by a system that was only half updated from 15.2 to 15.3. I was eventually able to chroot into my hard drives root from a tty console in the installation system after I had failed to update for the third time. Then I was able to do a zypper dup, force reinstall the kernel and I was able to boot by boot installed system and hunt down the remaining Leap 15.2 packages.
